A Flicker of Light

Hi. My name's Andrew and this is my first post. I've wrestled with alcoholism my entire life and to this day have always been beaten pretty soundly. Not so bad that I'm in jail or destitute or even unemployed. Beaten badly enough
to feel that I'm letting everyone down. Myself primarily. I have relegated my hopes and dreams to the unattainable. My sense of spirituality has been non-existent(as have I) for 35 years. Until today.
I was walking by a lake near my house and noticed how still and glassy the water was. No wind at all. Reflective I thought. I noticed a sailboat about a mile out just drifting. Dead water doldrums. I compared that boats progress to my own journey through life. Stuck. Eventless. I walked along the breakwall rocks to get to the very edge of the water and looked down to the waters edge. Inscribed in the rock were words that I recognized but never really pondered: "The Lord is my shepherd." I was intrigued. Just the night before I was complaining to a sober friend of mine that I was having trouble
accepting the notion that a higher power could lead me and care for me.
I got home and Googled the "Shepherd" phrase and read the 23rd Psalm.
"He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul."
Call it what you will but, I asked and I received. That's the best start I could ever hope for here on Day 1 of being sober.

Hi Ambrew,

Welcome! I'm glad you found us.

Sometimes we find just what we need, at the time we need it and things work out. This is a great place for support and information.

Welcome Andrew and congrats on Day 1 It may not seem like much yet but tomorrow morning it will.
Nothing like a little devine intervention to awaken something inside, that was moving.

Sounds like a good one! I had mine driving the highways of Mexico. As I was driving the sun was coming up on the Sierra Madre, my husband sound asleep, I knew, felt, and exuded from every cell in my body the knowledge that I would no longer be a slave to the bottle.
