Pharmacological assistance

I am going to see my doctor this week about alcohol and depression. I know about depression, but what drugs should I ask about for help with alcoholism.

It's good to see you are seeking medical advice.

Let the doctor decide what you need or if you need
anything.

I got sober w/o drugs and many others have too.
My depression left by 3 months of sobriety.
This may or may not be true for you.
I certainly hope so.

Take care and let us know how you are doing..

My sponsor tells me the same thing, that the depression will go away eventually. I don't know, it started decades ago. Does that mean it'll take decades to work itself out too?

Eh depression isn't something that 'works itself out' really, not even when sober. A combination of therapy and medication or just one of those two usually is required and a lot of hard work.

I suffered for decades from what was
diagnosed as "Situational Depression"

I did use various meds and did theraphy.
Not until I finally quit drinking did it leave.
That was 17 years ago..with no meds.

As I said...this is not always the case.
I surmise it depends on the type of depression.

Take care..

I went to the doc a couple of weeks ago and she prescribed Campral which seems to be working well, I havn't had a drink since I started taking it, it helps with withdrawals and cravings and it is also supposed to make you not want to drink , but don't know about depression, your doc may give you an antidepressant. Also Campral will not make you sick if you drink is what the doc told me it is a different type of med than antabuse and works differently.

Beyondbedlam,

I have taken antaabuse. It doesn't really do anything UNLESS you drink, then it makes you horrifically sick. I, of course, being incredibly curious had to test that out... it's true it does make you incredibly sick... whew, don't do that trust me.

There are other anticraving drugs you can get. For me all I needed was a deterrent to help me get through the first few weeks, after that I was fine. The other thing that antaabuse worked for was that by taking it every morning, I reaffirmed my commitment to stop drinking each and every morning. It was a great reminder.

For the record, I was one of the drinkers that had a hard time connecting the drinking with the bad feelings the next morning... for some reason I knew it was all caused by the alcohol, but I would "forget"... well antaabuse took care of that... that experiment I engaged in made it very immediate... drink, throw up, pounding headache, nausea, blood shot eyes, extremely bad red complexion, aching and sore, dizziness (actually fell down and bruised my knees, body just went limp), did I mention incredibly nautious... you get the idea... it all happened within about 1/2 hour of taking a drink (one one ounce shot)

Over all, it worked wonderfully. It helped with my resolve when I was still weak from drinking and I got through it amazingly easily... well other than my "experiment" with it. LMAO, I am just too darned stubborn and curious! :)

Peace, Levi
