Morning.

My daughter (E) will call today to chat. She's calmed down a bit from her worries.

No joy on the night video. The batteries were too old. I put new one's in yesterday. I'll check this morning to see if any critters wandered by.

Today will be fun. I'll unclamp the box, sand the sides, and cut the top from the bottom. Then my very favorite part - I'll slather it in teak oil and watch the figure and color pop. Once the finish dries I'll install the hinges and latch and it will be ready to give to my daughter (K).

Here's how it looks right now:

You are amazing Charon. That looks very complex. :) xx  s

Charon 03-30-2020 06:19 AM

Morning.

Venus, not so complex. Just each corner clamped near top and bottom in each direction, long and short - 8 clamps total. Over time I accumulated good quality clamps that are easy & quick to place and clamp.

Today will be a minor adventure. I'm making my first attempt at baking regular bread. I have a recipe to follow but (of courst) I'm going to mess with it a bit. Not much. The recipe has toasted sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. I'm going to do half sunflower and half pumpkin seeds and toast them too. Also, it calls for white, wheat, and rye flours. I'm going to substitute wheat for the rye - which I don't have and can't go get. Pictures tomorrow.

venuscat 03-30-2020 06:50 AM

Oh I can't wait to hear about this. :)
I am thinking about getting a bread maker.
I want to make sourdough among other things.

And I actually love clamps....grew up with my dad in his garage and he had so may work tools....he used to let me help turn the levers on the clamps etc.....did I mention I can lay bricks? :)

Hope you have a great day Charon. :) s xx

Morning.

Venus, yes my Dad taught me so much too. We had almost no disposable money so we made everything we needed for ourselves. It was never a question of can we - always how will we. I'm very grateful and passed the same attitude/skill on to my children.

I had fun making the bread. One thing I will change next time. Last step was to slice the top with a single edge razor. When I did that the loafs fell a wee bit. I'll score the top either before the last rise or halfway through it. It is delicious anyway. The crust is perfect.

These are crocuses I saved from my Dad's garden after he died. I just love them.

I think the second waxing of the box will be enough and I'm hoping I can get the hardware installed. Hopefully pictures tomorrow.

venuscat 03-31-2020 07:43 AM

Oh Charon....so much love. I have such mooshy warm feelings right now....yes, I am so blessed as well to have had a dad like that. He did everything. :)

The crocuses are beautiful. I love that you did that.

I have my mum's favourite plants here, even the ones I don't like...like a couple of mini african violets, just because they were her favourite and these.....my favourite, crown of thorns. :)

Morning.

I remember Crown of Thorns. Pretty pictures. Aren't they hard to bloom? Don't they get pretty big? Do you cut them back?

Yesterday, Mrs & me went for a walk in a nearby woods. No one else there. Water was rushing and the three waterfalls wer raging. Three miles. I was tired when we got home.

No pics of the box yet. When I was installing the hinges one of the screws (defective) broke off deep in the wood. In my past life that would have been an excuse to drink. Instead I tried a couple of things which didn't work. Finally, after putting it on a back burner, I thought of a perfect solution. Much better outcome than drinking. If I had, I would be hungover and the problem with the box would still be unresolved. Pics tomorrow.

Everyone, keep safe!

venuscat 04-01-2020 07:19 AM

I love being able to put my brain into gear these days. :) Never gets old. :)
Glad you found a solution love. :)

Yes and yes and no....I don't cut them back.
They need a lot of sun and you need to let them dry out between waterings.

That walk sounds divine.....I am jealous. :)
Hope you have a great day dear Charon. xx ❤️

Sorry it has taken me a while to reply again. I am still working around the clock. Luckily I like working so no complaints from me on that one.

Thank you Venuscat for the comments on the style. It was very perceptive of you to see so much from the tiny glimpse that I posted!

You are spot on although the walls are dark blue/grey. The black in the background is print of an old renaissance masterpiece that has been digitally altered. I think you will all recognize the face!

The fireplace was painted white gloss when I brought the house and I am very proud to have stripped it back to the slate myself. There are a lot of plants but I don't share the green fingers of yourself and Charon so I am limited to hard to kill varieties.

I hope you are feeling less tired now and have managed to enjoy some sunshine Venuscat. I like that you are taking care of your mother's plants. The crown of thorns has gorgeous delicate colours in its petals.

I am a bit confused by the actions of the landlady. Doesn't sound good having builders around at a time when we are all trying to social distance.

Charon, it was lovely to log in and see you were glad to hear from me. It made me feel all warm inside.

I am glad to learn that your daughter is a little less anxious. These are stressful times on so many levels.

The bread looks delicious. My husband is getting rather frustrated because he cannot find any wholemeal flour or yeast online to bake bread. There has been a lot of panic buying both in the shops and online stores here. In times of stress, he makes bread so I assume it is calming for him in some way. The smell of fresh baked bread is fab.

Like Venuscat, I enjoyed hearing about your dad and how you have passed his legacy forward. It is wonderful to think of those core values being passed down generations. Your dad's crocuses are gorgeous too.

While I was sorry to hear about the screws breaking off it did make me laugh when you said in your past life that would have been an excuse to drink. It is very funny just how many reasons there always were! Whether it was a good thing or a bad thing it always seemed like a good reason to drink. I shall look out for the pics of the finished article.

Your walk sounds gorgeous with the waterfalls and no people in sight. My dog lives for water so she would be in her element joining you both for a walk.

Dee, I was thinking of you earlier. Around lunchtime today I realised that I hadn't had any pain today and I hadn't even noticed! Then I remembered you saying that it took around 6 weeks for the nerve pain meds to kick in so I am guessing that they are making a difference! I have adjusted to them now too apart from a tendency to oversleep!

I hope that you are bearing up and taking care of yourself. I am guessing that you might be needing to be all things to all people right now.

My love to you all. You are never far from my thoughts.

How great you're pain free!
I hope you'll find the sleepiness wears off too Lucinda :)

I love the Bowie painting :)

It is marvellous Dee, the sleepiness doesn't carry into the day so that is all cool. I am just going to need to get a louder alarm clock!

Good spot with the Bowie!

Speak to you all soon. :)

HaHaHa. I call my collection of orchids my Darwin collection. Only the fittest (hardest to kill) survived.

Alway good to hear from each of you. It means a lot that you care enough to post.

Always an excuse - never a reason. lol I finally got it throughmy thick head what my therapist meant when he said I have to own my drinking. I made the choice. No external event caused me to drink. I had to own my choice - admit that it was my choice.

Box is finally done and I've babbled way too much, so here are some pictures:

Morning.

Today I'll put away all the tools and straighten the woodshop to get it ready for the next project. The mobile window cart isn't rough carpentry but it also doesn't require the precision and tension of working with beautiful and expensive exotic wood.

Yesterday I tilled the vegetable garden. I spared the curly kale so Mrs can have some fresh greens. They're pretty lame but she asked me no to till them under. I have kidney stones and so can't eat kale (thank goodness). I'll probably till again just before she gets ready to plant.

Here's a pic of some snowdrops that are blooming now.

Charon 04-04-2020 07:21 AM

Morning.

Today a shave and long hot shower. This afternoon there's a local orchid club meeting on-line with the speaker that was to talk at this month's meeting. Other than that I'm taking the day off - no chores - just because I feel like it.

I'll probably start on the mobile window cart tomorrow. This morning I moved an expendable standard size cattleya outside under cover. I'll bring it in each evening. Once I establish it's not getting too much sun and it's safe, I'll move the other three standard cattleyas out. Miniatures and phalanopsis stay in year round.

The shop is ready for the next project. I might start on it tomorrow. No hurry. I'm building it for the standard cats and they will be outside till fall when the weather turns. Still, I want to get it out of the way and it's an easy project - nothing too precise needed. It's functional - not for show.

Everyone be careful out there. Better yet, don't go out there.
