start of 8th week

answer:

and the winner is MrWolfie68

the question marks were part of the sequence - not indications of where the missing symbols should go (see how hard it is to break our conditioning)

I am going back to eating normally (meat, fries and stuff) - eating healthily might be great in the long run - but it's wearing me down just now (totally exhausted and flopping around like a dying plant)

anyway - well done if you lasted another day :-)

Here is another hard IQ question (I did not get this - I did the table and had the answer looking at me, but misunderstood the question):

Gordon is twice as old as Tony was when Gordon was as old as Tony is now.

The combined age of Gordon and Tony is 112 years. How old are Gordon and Tony Now?"

Life just got more hectic for me as I’m back at uni this week and I’m also working and juggling family commitments. I was having a lot of anxiety and even starting to panic thinking about how overwhelming it all is
But I’ve realised it comes down to 3 simple things, and if I just remember these and follow these 3 steps, everything will be fine and everything will work out ok...

1. Breathe
2. Don’t drink
3. Take one day at a time

Great advice to yourself Willow, if we can take things piece at a time we remove the feeling of being overwhelmed. And isn’t it great scoring things off a list? I find when I am ultra busy, a routine is essential, though you need to put time in there for yourself!

Red, it is official, I hate you! Q) how look did it take for Toots to run screaming from the room when she read Redcardits riddle? A) 2.0006 seconds. ( it’s a long way to the door!)

Red ... that one gave me a headache ... but I believe I figured it out.

Gordon is 64 and Tony is 48. Had to get the pencil and paper out.

Hi Badge. I'm just a hanger-on tagging along with Willow and Red from the June class. Nice to meet you.

8th week (and I'm weak)

Wow MrWolfie68 – well done

(forgot to say – no calculator - but pen and paper allowed)

I started off trying to equation it:

Gordon[now] + Tony[now] = 112
Gordon[then] = Tony[now]
Gordon[now] = 2 x Tony[then]

(looking back at scrap paper I understood the question but forgot or got confused doing the table)

could not see a way forward with equations – so did a table (using Gordon[now] as variable)

Gordon[now], Tony[now], Difference[now], Gordon[then], Tony[then], Difference[then]

I chose:

Gordon[now] = 70 (too high)
Gordon[now] = 60 (too low)
Gordon[now] = 65 (too high - then got confused)
Gordon[now] = 64 (right answer – but for some reason I was looking for Gordon[then] = 2 x Tony[then])
Gordon[now] = 67 (Gordon[then] was 45 and Tony[then] was 23 – could see I had messed up and gave up)

Here is something a bit easier (although it looks crazy hard):

A bag of frogs weighs 50 pounds divided by half of its weight.
How much does the bag of frogs weigh?

Well done Wolfie!
Red they’re tricky!
Toots, yes I don’t know how I’d survive without lists lol, I LOVE crossing things off them and starting new ones once the old ones get too messy
Glad you like it Badger, I was feeling so overwhelmed I had to make it super simple and easy so I could just pull myself up when I started feeling anxiety creeping in and easily interject it to stop the cascade of anxiety into panic mode. I have just added one extra for mindfulness.

So now when anxiety/stress/fear etc starts to sneak in I have a quick simple tool to nip it in the bud.

1. Breathe (I take a few really deep breaths here)
2. Don’t drink
3. Focus on the task at hand
4. One day at a time

Love Willow x

Hi Wolfe, please feel free to tag on anytime!

Red, I was trying to do it in my head! No wonder it almost broke!

Willow, isn’t it great to find better coping mechanisms than just running away to a bottle and hoping everything will work itself out? ( we all know it doesn’t, problems just grow while they wait to be dealt with). And taking a step back to regroup is a brilliant one.

think I'm on day 51

had a phone call from my younger brother - (he's been in kuwait) can't believe it's 7 years since we spoke - arranged to have dinner (how time files)

got a damaged left wrist (drunken accident - bad sprain) that flares up periodically - very painful (much worse than a broken arm) - seems to be taking ages to repair this time

@ Willow68 - I've been free of anxiety attacks for a while, but what I did when I had them, was - breath in through my nose for 4 seconds (so lungs are full but not bursting), hold breath for 7 seconds, breath-out 8 seconds - always worked for me (do for few mins)

anyway - well done if you lasted another day :-) (the period around 2 months is soooo hard)

A bag of frogs weighs 50 pounds divided by half of its weight.
How much does the bag of frogs weigh?

answer is 10 pounds

bag of frogs (BF) = 50/(BF x 0.5)
multiple right hand side of equation top and bottom by 2
BF = 100/BF
transpose BF from right to left
BF x BF = 100
BF = square root of 100
BF = 10

Here is another question

Thanks Red! Yes I deep breathe too, but I hadn’t tried that technique. I’ll try it next time. Breathe in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. Thanks again

today is day 51

OK - no more puzzles

but the answer for the last:

you can see 2 = 4 so E must be 2 (nowhere else 2 can = 4)

6 = 3 so B must be 6 and A must be 3 (nowhere else 6 can = 3)

that leaves D is 5 or 1, and, C is 5 or 1 (so only one test needed)

choose D=5 and C = 1, and it all adds up correct

I'm feeling dog-rough and ill at the moment (but at least I'm not one of the 25 million people who die directly because of alcohol each year, globally)

anyway - well done if you lasted another day :-)

Red I like your new horsey avatar

Have a great weekend everyone, I’ll be mostly studying... with a bit of yoga thrown in to break it up

completed day 53 (counted properly)

kinda weak and run down - not enjoying anything much (food, games, books, movies, other stuff) at the mo

I could so easily drink at the moment - just to get numb

turns out I have carpal tunnel syndrome in my left wrist (stared by a drunken fall) - so now I'm going to have that agony on and off forever :-(

my right knee is a bit painful (another drunken injury) and I have gout in my toes (drinking has messed up my weeing mechanism)

apart from being a rotting corpse, I'm great

anyway - well done if you made it another day :-)
(I really know how hard it is to last a bad day)
