We didn't dance last night as much as usual, but I can at least state that I did some exercise, minimal as it was. This morning I was at the gym for 60 minutes. Full body oriented, low-ish weight, fast paced stuff. Definitely a good and tiring workout.

Tonight we're going to a Halloween party; open bar which we paying for which means I won't get my money's worth as I'll be sticking to club soda, from what I've been told a large buffet so no cooking for me tonight, and a DJ so I have some more dancing in my future.

We attended a wine-tasting event last weekend.

Talk about not getting your money's worth!

It was a nice event, though, all things considered.

Are you going in costume tonight?

We'll only know a few people tonight, but it should be fun. Our friend knows the owner of the restaurant that is being rented and we're sitting at the table of the owner so we're assured of good service. :-)

Yes, it's a costume party. We're going as characters from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. My wife is going to as Columbia and I'm going as Eddie.

Are you okay, GC?

Was your area affected by the strong winds?

It was windier than usual, but nothing too far out of the ordinary. Thanks for asking.

Lately

Uncharacteristically I haven't posted in a while because I haven't done any exercise. Or cooking.

On the way home from a great Halloween party on Saturday I started to have severe breathing issues that continued most of the night so I did not go to the gym on Sunday. Toward the end of Sunday I developed a minor toothache that got worse during the night and I woke up with half my face swollen and lots of pain. I called my dentist, who could see me the following morning (Tuesday), and spent most of the day dealing with pain management as the pain and swelling increased. The meds knocked me out and I spent most of the day sleeping.

After a quick examination on Tuesday the dentist felt that the issue was too serious for her to deal with and I needed to see a specialist. Fortunately she was able to arrange for me to see an endodontist and after an examination she immediately consulted with her colleague. They presented me with two options; one was an immediate root canal along with some other procedure or arrange that day to see an oral surgeon and have the tooth removed and the infection drained. With no guarantee of success I opted for the former to possibly save the tooth and fortunately it was successful. Since then I've been on a heavy dose of antibiotics and some low end pain killers that I've only sparingly taken. I'm still swollen, am having trouble eating, and the infection is sapping me of energy. Fortunately my fever has broke, but there was no way I was going to the gym for my normal Wednesday 6 AM class; sleep was the way to go.

Clearly not a lot of good news in the above, but at least I'm on the mend.

Thank God that you are on the mend, GC. I had a feeling that something was up.

Sorry to hear that you have been in pain; glad to hear that they were able to save your tooth

Thanks. Monday I was in so much pain I took an expired prescription pain med that we still had from when my son had his knee surgery. It kicked my butt and I literally slept all day. Crazy. I now understand why he backed off of them very quickly. Yesterday, between getting squeezed into see the dentist and the endodontist I spent my time in the resepctive waiting rooms reading; yeah I could have gotten online via my phone, but I wasn't sure what to write and I know I wasn't thinking clearly. On a side note, I didn't take any pain meds yesterday aside from Alleve because I knew I'd be driving. I haven't taken anything today, but may take another OTC one in a short while.

Timing Is Everything

There's probably never a good time for something like this, but this week we're unusually busy. Tonight is my daughter's b'day so we're going out to dinner, tomorrow friends who live in England and are about to move to Australia are coming to the house, Friday I have a book club meeting, and Saturday we're going to dinner and a concert with friends. I won't be able to have anything of substance tonight and given tomorrow's procedure that will likely extend at least until that evening. Even if I only have soup or mashed potatoes at dinner tonight I'm not going to miss the opportunity for the family to be together and since it's likely we won't see our friends coming tomorrow for a couple of years I'm not going to cancel.

I wouldn't cancel either.

Soup is healing and, well, mashed potatoes are good for the soul.

Hope you enjoy all of your plans, GC.

Thanks SL for the affirmation and the good wishes for what's to come.

Dinner last night was at a tapas restaurant so we had many small dishes eaten family style. I couldn't eat about half of what was ordered, but the menu was varied enough that we were able to order enough soft food to make sure I didn't leave hungry. Most importantly the birthday girl had a great time.

I'm looking forward to seeing our friends tonight, but I'm not up for cooking so we're going to a local Mediterranean restaurant. They have an extensive offering of dips which means I'll be able to get enough soft food such as hummus, babagannush, etc. to satisfy my appetite. They also serve soup, which will likely be the hot component of my meal.

Goings On

I stayed up later than I expected last night after dinner to watch the last game of the World Series. For the first time in a long time I slept like a rock so I feel pretty good today, but still weak from the infection and less than my normal intake of calories. While not pleasant, it's all temporary so I'm not obsessing and plan on being back in the gym Saturday morning.

I have another endodontist procedure this afternoon and after that I'm going to rest up by reading the last 75 pages of my book club book.

It was a good Series!

How is your breathing doing, GC?

Yes, it was a good series and I'm glad that Houston won.

My breathing feels great today; thanks for asking.

Today

Another day another visit to the endodontist. Everything is going well, but getting shot up with Novocain all the time isn't fun. I'll be fine in a couple of hours.

Sadly, no exercise will happen today, but tomorrow I'm breaking out of lazy mode and will be at the gym.

My book club meeting got postponed so for the first time in almost a week I'll be in the kitchen and will be making chicken stir fry.

After six sloth-esque days I was a the gym this morning. I didn't have a great workout, but I'm glad I went. My wife, who is as dedicated as me to exercise, was suggesting that I don't go and rest, but I felt strongly about giving it a try and while it felt good to be there the only aspect of the experience that I can attach the adjective strong to is how I felt. :-)

Yesterday's dental procedure was more invasive than I anticipated and a few hours after writing about last night's dinner I realized that it wasn't going to happen for me. My wife foraged on leftovers and I had another wonderful mashed potatoes dinner. I'm not screwing around with expectations for tonight and am currently making a split pea soup. To ensure that I achieve a baby food texture I'll be using my immersion blender. :-)

I'm back to my normal exercise schedule with only VERY minor discomfort from my root canal, but the infection is still lingering and my body is channeling its resources to combat it. One of the results is that my stamina, which wasn't great to begin with, has taken another hit, but I'm not going to use that as an excuse to not do anything. I was at the gym yesterday morning and there again this morning for my usual Monday session with my trainer. After warmups I did 3 rounds of:

Single arm Db squat presses
Ball planks
Bosu ball pushups with knee thrusts
Ball slams
Ab wheel rollouts
Weighted decline sit ups
Leg raises

I really struggled during the first round, but some how performed better after that. Regarding stamina, I know it will return to some degree once I'm fully healed, but I am also contemplating running again. Watching the NYC Marathon yesterday was somewhat bitter sweet. I enjoyed the tactical decisions of the pros and thought about my friends and family who I knew were running; I was also a bit saddened because I intended to be on the course had things gone the way I hoped.

We didn't have the split pea soup on Saturday, but it was yesterday's dinner. Tonight I'm making pasta with a carbonara sauce and a side salad.

Hope that you are 100% soon, GC.

I thought about you yesterday when I watched a bit of the marathon.

Thanks SL. IMO, I'm just about there; I was at the endodontist this morning and she was very pleased with the way things are progressing, but gave me a prescription for another 3 days of antibiotics which indicates to me that the infection is lingering longer than anticipated.

As for the marathon, I wrapped my head around not running this year a while ago; it's just what it is albeit disappointing. Maintaining the dedication to train and then run the race is not easy, but the feeling of completing the task is special and hopefully I'll be a finisher next year.

Today

Not much to write about; dinner plans changed last night so the carbonara is still an option. I may go with a lighter dinner because I want to hit the hay early in order to be at the gym by 6AM tomorrow.

Exercise will be limited to walking and stretching.

I was at the gym at 6 AM and did 4 rounds of:

Glider knee thrusts
Kb goblet squats
Mountain climbers
Lateral box sprints
Push ups
Kb swings

I'm pretty sure there was one additional exercise, but I can't recall it right now.

No cooking tonight; we're going to visit my MIL.

My core is quite sore from exercises earlier in the week so all I'm going to do today is some pushups.

Dinner tonight is up in the air for a number of reasons; I have some ideas and will be prepared with whatever comes our way. Okay, that sounded ominous; it's all for good reasons.
