I've finally got it! The true meaning of Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is to test your emotional stability and prepare you for surviving Christmas. The interval between Thanksgiving and Christmas provides further testing and practice, a carefully graduated program of stress culminating on Dec. 25th. Christmas "presents" (returned on Dec. 26), long post office lines. Finally Christmas! ("Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" "I saw mummy kissin' Santa Claus!" "God [help] us all, said Tiny Tim!") If you can survive Christmas you can survive anything!
But I forgot New Years. The time of "New Year's Resolutions", a fragile species, a withering plant. The hope that the New Year may be better than the preceding one. Failing that, it's stiff upper lip, as the Brits say. Whatever happens things could always be much, much worse. Hilaire Belloc wisely observed, "Always hold the hand of nurse! For fear of finding ....something worse!" (Jim, who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion. (who started by munching on Jim's toes, then his ankles,knees, calves, etc. Jim found that quite unpleasant!
