Julia, I'm certainly not a seasoned meditator as I started doing it based on watching the videos I described and then the class. I believe there are different types of meditation and I have only tried the mindful meditation.

For me it does a couple of things. It puts me in tune with life, myself, what's happening around me in the moment. It's helps me to stop and "smell the roses". The other thing it does is it offers me an escape sort of like alcohol (hmmm...that's probably why a lot of people recommend it as part of recovery).

Once I became practiced and was meditating regularly (especially during the 8 week class I took) if something was stressing me out and I could feel my BP rising I could take as little as 5 minutes (anywhere, anytime) and meditate and it would bring me back down a level or two. Somewhat like a mental recess.

I'm glad you brought up the topic and thank you because I really haven't practiced my meditation since the class ended and I was still drinking then so now I am very curious to get back into practice in sobriety and see what it has to offer.

I think the key to getting something out of meditation is to practice it regularly. When I first started the 8 week class I wasn't getting feeling much of a difference, but by mid-way through and certainly towards the end there was a noticeable difference. BTW, I didn't join the class to help me stop drinking at that point in time I didn't think drinking was a problem.

Morning Everyone,
I'm feeling the positive changes in my body & mind. Made me wonder if the people around me notice.?. Then I realized it doesn't really matter if they do, I notice & it's starting from the inside out.

Neverthought,MrP... I also have 2 boys, mine are 26&17. We have a good relationship & I would do anything for them. They are also very close, which I am grateful for. All I can say is, If there is only one reason you don't drink, Do it for them, it goes by so fast. That goes for all the Dads & moms here. Trust me, you don't want those regrets.

Julia,,, There are so many ways to meditate, and for different reasons. I agree with the gang, it is relaxation for the mind, finding peace in yourself. Its worth researching & find what works fo you. It's like sobriety, it doesn't happen overnight. Another positive life journey.

Kgirl,,, How do you think you did on your test? I get how you think about sobriety right now. If your like me, 1 drink is 1 drink my over my limit. I look at it as a gift to realize that now. It took me alot of beatings to get there. Thats why we are here, so you don't have to. Hope the flooding isn't bad.

Elle,,, Happy early Bday. What a great birthday present for your girls to take you out & spoil you. There must be a reason for that? It is a gift to me to spend a day with my kids. If you feel the itch, Look around and be grateful. Enjoy the day.

Neverthought,,, I like the idea about trying to follow up with MIA A-team, I've thought about that before. I know the intentions are noble, but not sure it is possible? I know when I joined a class before, I just disappeared back into the hell & didn't come back here for awhile,,,guilt. I can say now it was stupid. what do we do? Alcoholism is a killer.

MrP,,, It's funny how humans take a simple amazingly positive message of love and compassion, and turn it into a reason to Idolize, Fear, hate & war against each other. Something I've always had a hard time with. The one thing I like about buddha's teachings is it wasn't about him & to not follow him. Buddhism isn't really a religion, humans turned it into one. The funny thing is most people think the big fat guy in so many statues is buddha. Its Not.

Well everyone hope I didnt put you to sleep with my ramblings. Have a great day & be good to you.. Thank you A-Team

Quincy,
That was a great explaination, thank you.
Some people use running, exersize etc as meditation. I am going to the gym, put my headphones on & lift, that is a sort of meditation for me, concentate on breathing.

I have an idea for our buddy system:

I know this is an anonymous forum and it should remain so, so phone numbers and whatsapp groups are out of question, but what if those who want to join the "buddy system" opened a new Facebook accounts with the exclusive goal of being able to have each other on Facebook messenger, meaning we can reach each other's phones directly. We can then assign buddies to each other, so that if someone has being away for a couple of days the buddy can send a message just to make sure everything is ok and, in case things are not, the buddy can remind us that the A-team will not judge anyone and offer the first layer of support. It also means we can catch potential relapses early and maybe stop them from turning into binges.

This would be by no means supposed to replace SR, the role of the buddy would be to try and reach out and do only two things: report back to the A-team and if help is needed suggest the person comes back to SR. Also in my opinion the buddy shouldn't be contacted for help, SR is here for this, the buddy should just be the one who tries and reach out to someone who has been away from SR unexpectedly.

What do you guys think?

P

Well, Day-43 is winding down. Worked at Dick's Sp.Gds. 10 hours yesterday. Mostly unboxing women's sports bras (I hired on as a GUN salesman!!) Yeeeesh. Oh well, if you guys wanna know anything about ladies athletic apparel, just give me a shout. Went to my house about lunchtime today. My significant other said to feel free to come back home anytime I was ready. Funny, I was gettin' used to the routine at mom's house. I may move back in this next week..we'll see. (But that is good news). She said I looked real good. That's good because I feel good. Walking 2 miles every evening has really made a difference. I hope everybody does great things this evening. I want everybody to be healthy and sane.

Hi everyone

Checking in toward the end of 44 days.

Today was fun at work. I'm so glad I have more energy now. I got good sleep last night and am getting my personality back. I think sobriety is bringing a more authentic confidence than the one I had when I was drinking. It's funny that 44 days ago I was lamenting "I don't like drunk me" when I didn't really realize at the time that I didn't like "drinking me" either. When I was not actually drunk, I was still not myself. It's starting to come out now: today I was laughing with people and was told over and over how delightful my company is. And you know what? It is. I like being around myself. And that feels so good.

I personally am not crazy about changing the forum with which we communicate. I think that SR is set up really well. I understand the idea of a "buddy" system but why not just use the built in one here? You can private message here if you want, and there's an app you can get for your phone. I feel like it's a community beyond the August class and splitting it off takes away from what it is. There are lots of people who look at these threads and it can help them. Our words and our sobriety developing is as much for the lurkers as the a-team. You know? It's a well intentioned idea but there's a lot we get here: from the mods, the old timers, etc. Also as the child of two alcoholics who is pretty well versed with al-anon principles, we can't save anyone. People can come here for support, through the class, the chat, the 24 hour thread, PM, and more. I'm not interested in circumventing this forum. It works because people who have worked it made it.

I'm grateful for all of it and for all of you. Hope everyone has a good sober night/day. I'm going to go for a walk in this city I'm becoming more accustomed to being in now; probably will grab some dinner.

In Gratitude

B

All of the above being said, just FYI mods - I just got the iPhone 7 and the app doesn't let me respond to threads anymore. Is it a kink with the app and the new phone? Just FYI. I've been responding on my iPad and my laptop; the app on my phone lets me read but I can't respond. Three words get typed and the app closes out automatically.

Day 36

There's no reward for being sober. That's something I'm realizing. I mean, it's not like you stop having problems and get to live happily ever after, just because you don't drink. Lasting happiness is not the result. Life's still life, and you have to deal with bad days and the discomforts that you used to smooth over with booze.

In confronting that fact, however, I am seeing the world around and within me with fresh vision.
