Wow! Some really great posts here. Y'all mind if I join? 23 days today so I am definitely an "undie." Trying to put as many tools in my tool belt as I can...

For now, SR and support from my SO, friends, and family is enough. When I was active in AA I very much appreciated the saying, "Take what you need and leave the rest." Not sure if I will go back to the rooms, but hoping that I can if I find that what I am doing isn't enough--BEFORE I pick up another drink.

Wishing you all a wonderfully sober Tuesday!!

hi Elicia08 --glad to see you here. This is a great bunch of people. I wouldn't be sober today without them. They listen and we are all in the same boat. Welcome.
I also want to mention that I had another drinking dream last night.
It seemed so real. Darn glad to wake up sober and it was only a dream.
Whew !

Elicia, glad to hear you have good supports, seems to be key, along with really believing in myself, my support people, including those here, "get it."

Mk - Congrats on 34 days sober. Sounds like a huge health scare, but people heal when they abstain from alcohol. My lifelong anxiety issues keep improving with time, whereas when I drank my anxiety got worse. Good luck with the new school year. It was hard for me to integrate back into groups of people who expected me to drink. The support in SR and AA help me keep my compass pointed towards sobriety and healing.

Elicia - Great job on 23 days.

Charilee - Hello and welcome!

For me sharing what hurt and what works has been a huge help. Have a great day Undies!

Welcome, Elicia!

Love seeing the new faces. This thread was my lifesaver during my first year and I still like to hang out here. People shared some really good insights and provided the support and understanding that got me through some rough patches.

Yes! Already at work, feeling alive and checked in to find most liver test results looking really good! Note from Dr. With a congratulations, said he could tell "honest efforts" being made, asked how he could help sustain, and feeling positive. Thanks all and I hope you have a really good day.

Congratulations on your good lab results Mklove! It is amazing what can happen once we get rid of that poison known as alcohol!

MkLove--glad your tests came back ok---I also went through that and I'm going to see another dr. in a couple of weeks --I have abnormal cells in my esophagus.
it's probably from drinking vodka straight. Well, Just have to wait and see . Going today for my last eye apt. at least it better be. this Dr. stuff is getting old.
It's a beautiful day here in the Dakota's and plan on going for a walk. Have a good day you guys.

MK, how great that your doctor added that wonderful note! Praise and support all you could ask for. My doc seemed super embarrassed when I confronted him with my drinking - middle aged middle class woman, husband, grandson, job - I've seen him since for other issues and he has never once broached the subject of either my alcohol abuse or my subsequent recovery. Just once it would have been nice to have someone in his position to acknowledge my hard work.

MK, it sounds like your doc is a true winner, as are you for your work on recovery.

Babs, I know it's not pleasant finding that we have damaged our bodies to a scary point. Not drinking is the single most important thing we can do to preserve our health. I had cirrhosis, next to final stage and the doc said it mostly wasn't from drinking (biopsy can tell that) but continuing to drink could only make it worse.

Between losing weight and not drinking, my liver has improved a great deal though I still have to have imaging tests twice a year because having had cirrhosis puts me at higher risk of liver tumors. Mostly I don't think about it because that isn't the way I want to live my life. I'm simply happy to wake up reasonably healthy every single day.

Toots, how unfortunate that you didn't have a supportive doc!

in my brain I have managed to talk myself through the rough times. and coming here is my #1 help.
Have a great day you guys. Hugs to all of you !

Welcome Elicia!

Glad you received good results from your tests Mklove!

Toots, I kind of had the same reaction from my doctor when I told him that I had quit. He actually asked me what I was going to do when goings to gatherings where people where drinking. I told him I would drink anything but booze if I went at all. He too didn't mention it at all at my followup visit six months later.

With somewhere around 15% of the population having alcohol abuse issues, one would think that doctors would ask questions about drinking with their patients. Maybe they are uneasy discussing alcoholism because it isn't something that shows up on a lab report with a bunch of numbers. Doctors are so number focused and prescription oriented these days because they see so many patients every day. They seldom have the time to really get to know you on any level.

You folks are all doing great! Be proud of what you have accomplished so far!

SG, I used to work with a bunch of docs and can tell you that my impression is that it's not uncommon for some proportion of them to be not very comfortable in dealing with people.
