Was at my recovery meeting last night and one of the leaders gave this analogy (based on the Bible) about our addictions.

They're like weeds. When it first comes up, you can just pluck it out quite easily. The more you continue to water and feed it, the roots grow deeper and it begins to spread all through the garden. By this time you need a shovel to get that deep root out and prevent it from growing.

So many of us have been watering and feeding that weed for years, and the struggle to remove it is going to be greater than if we pulled it out years ago.
