Answering those questions for yourself will help give some insight and how to plan for next time. If you can't answer those questions, next time you're thinking about picking up, answer them. It'll help you start identifying your triggers and your AV, so you can guard against them better. Also, if you're feeling triggered, do something else and keep yourself distracted. You can do this Optimist!
