Yes, Wolfie and V! I turned on the TV around 3pm east coast US time and that's all that was on my TV. Scary how the massacres are accelerating.

(Warning: Trump afficionados and NRA members, please ignore this paragraph!). I shouldn't talk politics but between that buffoon Trump and the gun lobby it's getting a little scary right now!

Morning overs

Yes, sassy, v and Wolfie , that's a big part of to when you turn on, very tragic these shootings but I do think the press love the news and sensationalise it all.

Hi itchy, thanks for your words. I've got sinusitis and the asthma doesn't like the cold weather (waiting for an appt with the respiratory specialist) so feeling a bit blah at the moment which in turn makes work problems more excaberated. I felt lousy yesterday and just didn't want to be there but don't like to be off sick with the way things were I booked half day holiday and came home and just chilled all afternoon and evening.

Fbl, I'd love to listen to your radio programme, could you send me the link, please?

Right, gonna have some breakfast and think about getting ready for work.

Raining outside here.

Itchy you missed me out in your exercise nut count! I still jog with the dog carrying weights and do upper body exercises on the walk. I don't give a monkeys what others think and it saves time and money not having a gym membership. I used to work reception at a gym, I swear some of the 'yummy mummys' just went to be seen in the latest Lycra fashions - heaven help if they actually broke into a sweat!! Me? If I don't end a red glowing puddle I haven't worked out properly!! I hate exercise though, I wish I had been born with skinny genes! ( then I could wear skinny jeans!)

Mags, glad you are feeling a little better. I am sorry about your colleagues in the Tyneside area, but I imagine they both had other side issues going on, stress and depression or hidden addiction, family problems. Sometimes something is just literally the last straw.

Am I the only one who hates the misuse of the word literally?? Twice in recent weeks I have heard people say ' I was literally scared to death' er no actually, if you were literally sacred to death you would be around to make such stupid comments you moron!

Sorry, pedantic moan over!

Sad to hear about Cali, what is more terrifying is that a mass killing happens every day in America, but only the really big ones get noticed.

I understand the Constitution, and do not in any way wish to denigrate the words of my American Cousins, but that was written almost 230 years ago when America and the world were very, very different. I firmly believe that with rights, come responsibilities, and sometimes those responsibilities might mean not availing oneself of the rights.

I hope that didn't seem to political or offensive to anyone, it was a personal comment and hey, I have been known to be wrong. ( honest, Mr T made a note of it in his diary...he's thinking of getting it tattoed.)

Must dash, need to jog with the dog!!

Tsk, Itchy, never rely on spell check!
I use literally wrong all the time...on purpose, ironically. Because I'm funny that way.
I've gone running once since I moved in here. Gym??? Idk why I fall off that wagon so easily.
Mags

Toots I hear ya on the exercise. It is not attractive for me either haha. I go all out.

You know what America needs? More guns! And you know who should be able to buy them, use them, and store them? Just anyone!!!! That is sarcasm.

Wolfie, don't forget Peter Boyle's performance in Young Frankenstein, one of my all-time favorites (I got a feeling Itchy likes it too).

IP,
Actually I'm pretty nearly a perfect speller without rote memorization. I don't depend on spell check but do glance back looking for anything it caught. My problem is I never was a typist and becme a fsast six finger typist looking at the keyboard. The speed used to be better and more accurate but I became sloppier and bludgeon teo keys at a time. Dang typ[os. It seems my typos have indeed increased since I switched to full size keyboards rather than little laptop ones. ( Noter, I corrected several before I let my typos fly on their own.)

I might as well slow back down as it takes more time to fix the typos than to type it slower and correct in the first place.

Actually having more guns has nothing to do with our problems here. Switzerland arms all households and all males serve a mandatory two year's militia time training and then are sent home with their guns in case they ever need to be recalled. So every household with a male in it is armed there. The Swiss are humans like us. So why the disparity in atrocities committed with guns there?

The violence here parallels other well documented periods of human history when great empires fell from the Roman one to now. They are usually preceded by a wave of nationalism as a way to legitimize some of our basest human behaviors as justified for security.

"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

George Santayana

Unfortunately in America today we are full of people who cannot tell you the name of the vice president, or locate on a map other countries including Canada if you remove the labels. The South I live in is increasingly anti-intellectual. Many have revised history already in case anyone actually reads it but that hasn't . People today worldwide believe that everything on the Internet is true increasingly too. Like my posts, anything longer than three lines and an emoticon, is intrusive to read, thus objectionable.
Benjamin Franklin said:

”Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”

Look at the spying on our own people today! Why? To protect us? Appeasement was glaringly demonstrated by good ol Neville in the period just before WWII. In response, this:

“An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.”

Winston S. Churchill

So which leaders are responsible?

“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”
Voltaire

Whose absurdities did the guy who attacked PP believe?
Whose absurdities did the latest one in California believe?

We elect our leaders here and the voter turnout is small. I have tried to show folks the voting history the people running for office have had in the past. Not right, not left, but the voting record. It is too long for many and since I read it, I must be one of those dang ones with no common sense, just "book knowledge."

For my friends overseas let me translate the code.

"Common sense" is what you know how to do, that assuages your feelings of insecurity with superiority when you encounter another with their own common sense.

"Political correctness" is only used by those who feel constrained by it and it has nothing to do with politics. It is usually in my experience and common sense (kidding) used by folks who are not allowed to be racist/misogynous/homophobic etc. publicly. Cannot force their beliefs on another in a public place.

Sassy, none of that was political, but if it was true, and it is, it will be found offensive by someone.

The problem with gun violence is not guns. However I do agree we need to screen folks for not only past felonies, but also for past mental illness.

You folks over there in the UK had a serious gun violence problem in Scotland. So Scotland eliminated the right to have a gun without strict controls on who and where. So they then had a rise in knife killings and violence. http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Justice/p...ucing-violence The problem is violence, and its causes. It is usually sanctioned by either a person, (like Trump encouraging the violence against a black protester from stage, and not asking them to stop) or by a social group be that a street gang, a political party, family and community, or religious leader. I own guns and think I am in no danger of anytime ever killing someone to escape a crime scene or to keep an unarmed person from trying to do so.

To me, we need to address the violence, not the means used to express it. And condemn, in no uncertain terms, anyone or thing, be that a belief, institution, political party or institution that by silence, assents to violence committed according to their teachings, desires, agendas. Whether they believe them or not is immaterial. Because you can tell the danger by the degree of continuous fear mongering that above person or thing generates shamelessly. They know and we know, and when someone does not know what to believe, they latch onto anything that tells them they can gang up and be safe, as long as they maintain fear and discipline in those they control.

Toots,
I did not say that the list was all inclusive, see I cannot sort out the personal details of several hundred folks on two website forums. See your heart is in it, not mine. (Double entendre, six points!) Have you read any of the Archie McNally series of mystery books with non-stop silly but factual wordplay woven into every story? Just read one, any one for the marvelous wordplay and obvious careful choosing of the vocabulary for that extra enjoyment for some, not all. I wasn't all that about the mystery or story line but how he expresses it. His wordplay is simply delightful.

Toots the problem is not with the age, like people, it must be understood in the context of the times and most folks here today remember only the parts of history that are convenient truths. One of our senators now dead, Daniel Moynihan said that :

"Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts."

RZ, your brevity is a gift lacking a wrapper or suspense, unbowed, and already undone and exposed, naked for all to see, meaning? Always "Hello!"

FBL!
Thanks I second that congrats to the courage of Courage.

Mags,
I figured!, It does not hurt my wellness bank at all to offer some more-all support .

I agree with you two as well Wolf and V.
I said it all above.

I do not carry a gun even though I can. As a weapons trainer for folks as a career I have a lot written on the subject. I can give links if one likes. It requires no agreement with any beliefs. mine or yours, and is a commentary on how I do not need to carry one. And alternatives.

Have a good day folks. Nothing pixes a terrorist off more than not letting them invoke your fear, or your hate. Living well, is the best revenge.

Wow Itchy ~ thank you for that. It was very interesting.

I am a little confused after listening to the news reports just now, claims that they have no idea re the motives of the two gun-people in San Bernadino. It seems fairly clear to me.

I agree with every word Itch I like how you know about Scotland too knives have for decades been the scurge of Scotland I'm not saying to sound hard/tough but knives are commonly used in fights from kids to normies to drunks to drug addicts my dad was in a notorious Glasgow gang was in prison he has a big scar which he covers with a beard its like my father's generation was knife mad - sad really

Guns are readily available anywhere in the uk if you ask around which is frightening

Your right Itch & I totally agree with every word

Venus,
It's not clear because we have had the same thing happen with every race and age when it was a work related response, school alienation, and many others. We can't assume, but it seems likely they were terrorists by the additional pipe bombs and arsenal found at their home. But the motive remains in question. An example. Tonight I watched The Wiz live. I'm white, born and raised here, but knew my immigrant grandparents whose families originated in France and Germany, lived in Colombia forva hundred years then my maternal grandparents moved here with wealth lost in 1929 along with everyone else. My dad was from England and emigrated to New York in 1949. But we watch shows like Malcolm and tonight's show and get funny looks from others who I guess can't relate beyond a narrow niche.

Yeah FBL!
Love that version too. Did you also like "One Night In Bangkok" from "Chess?"

Thanks Wolf.
I would know about the Scottish experience because guns and violence were my career so I research, or digress when I see the subject in my research. My post grad work was in International Relations, so my exposure was/remains broadly inclusive in scope. I'm a sheepdog, remember?
