Okay, here's a few in no particular order.....
Away From Her (Canadian); The Station Agent; The Piano; Secretary (that one is really saucy); The Royal Tannenbaums; Little Miss Sunshine (favourite line: "Are we winners, or are we losers?!"; Beasts of the Southern Wild; Big Night; Fargo. God, there's so many great movies. I like all the David Lynch movies, and Wes Anderson's. 'Moon' was cool, if you are into sci fi. Any favourite genres? Or just something you feel like right now?

Here's one for you, Miss Shabby: 'Jacob's Ladder'.
See? See? I'm actually talking to people here.
Life Aquatic was awesome. Remember Bill Murray doing that subtle little dance in his wet suit? And I love it when Willem Defoe gets all sulky - hilarious. And that scene at the end when they find the fish....he gets the most incredible poignancy amidst the humour, eh? I loved Ben Stiller in the Tannenbaums. When he says simply at the end to his father "It's been a tough year, Dad". Sob. Remember the Dad saying "Let's 'swing by'...." the grave?! So funny. He really gets people in all their weakness and strength.
When I watched The Piano I was hopelessly infatuated with someone. I think that influenced me somewhat. Saw it on the big screen too, which was fantastic.
How are you, Jen?

I hope you realise I'm enjoying it?
I did see Jacob's Ladder on the big screen when it came out. It was pretty out there, if I remember rightly. Think I need to see that again. Was it about Vietnam vets getting addicted and then being really messed up when they got back? Or do I have the wrong movie?

The mind f*ck* of Jacob's Ladder is that it wasn't about vets getting messed up, it was about dying and staring into the abyss.
I stare there, everyday.
Enjoying talking to you :-)
Do you mean existential angst over death and not being a believer in anything?
Speaking of existential angst, we saw Woody Allen's 'Irrational Man' on the weekend. I'm not an Allen fan really, but there was nothing else on. Find him a bit sexist and everything seems to be about justifying running off with his step-daughter. It's not too bad though. Same old chestnuts from Allen, as you would expect. Some good stuff on philosophy. At one point it is referred to as "verbal masturbation", particularly in contrast with 'real life' issues, such as death, for example. I thought that was quite good :-)

Venecia: Hi, I'm Venecia. So I have this wonderful niece whose iPod is really old and ... babbles on for 1.5 minutes ... and so I was wondering --
Genius: Could I take a look at the old phone?
Venecia: Sure! I sure hope I didn't screw things up?
(Genius taps a couple of times on the old phone.)
12.27528 seconds (Swiss Timing)
Genius: There you go! It's all set.

Frank, I will just say this. I went through several years of not believing in anything. My 'dark night of the soul'. It was truly terrifying. Now I do believe, and without going into the whys or wherefores, it is an evidence-based belief, or so I believe. Life doesn't end. There is simply too much evidence to the contrary. Why do I think I know this? Because millions of people have died, and have come back to report about it. They're not crazy, and they know the difference between reality and dreams or hallucinations. That's just the tip of the iceberg, but it was researching near-death experiences that did it for me. Just sayin'. I'll shut up now.
Frank, what are you going to do tomorrow?
There is, I think, good fear and bad fear. Good fear is vigilance. It forces us to think about what we'll do next to get through the hard stuff. Bad fear can be surrender to bad things ... planning for bad things. For people like us, we know what that is.
Our poor brains. We put them through such garbage. They need time. We need to give it to them.
A hug to you, Frank.
