6 Things to Never Say to a Recovering Alcoholic

#7 - "Hi, honey; our first Wine Tasting Club party is on the 15th."

Seriously?

I am still reeling a bit. I know I felt shock and I think I passed out a bit; my eyes must have rolled into the back of my head as I swear I saw brain matter.

I'll be okay; I know I will. I'll show up with some kind of funky, over-the-top wine glass from which to drink my sparkling water and I'll be a gracious hostess when it's our time to host but - seriously?

Gilmer 08-07-2015 06:34 AM

Can't he just go stag to these parties?

And there's no need for you to host. If you are feeling extra-benevolent, you can go have dinner out and watch a movie--and set a strict curfew for the party so that it ends early and you can come home once again to your own peaceful home.

Or he can just pass on the hosting. :)

I couldn't imagine anything more boring than a wine tasting party now.
I think my partner going stag would be my best solution to the problem?

Thanks, Gilmer and Dee, for your kind and wise suggestions. I know that I will be absolutely fine. Alcohol was never removed from our home when I stopped drinking. My husband is a very normal drinker. I never made an issue of it as alcoholism is all over my family and I knew I was, most likely, going to be exposed to it for the rest of my life. I know that it is 'unusual' but I thought of our home as my 'practice field' and I stayed away from bars and heavy drinking situations at all costs. The scope of my life was very narrow in the first few years of my sobriety so there wasn't much socializing anyway.

It is just the 'cluelessness' that is bugging me this morning.

Gilmer 08-07-2015 06:59 AM

I hear you!

Leshar--sorry that your new friend is being wishy-washy with you, but glad that you're still so firm in your commitment to recovery. You can't control him or his thoughts or actions, all you can do is take the best care you can of yourself. Wishing you the best today...

Leshar, I believe this guy is the one who asked you to a family get together? That's just weird he's now back peddling....and I don't get the feeling you were pushing for anything hardcore anyway.

I'm thinking of paying for a proper matchmaking service when I go back out there. They can be expensive, but at least you know the individual has invested time and money and been screened for what their true intentions are. I'm finding my impression of online dating here. now just full of many people who want to put a quick fix bandaid on their life to make themselves feel better. And sometimes just the continued attentions of new and different conquests - the thrill of the chase" is all they really want.

It's not really to do with you. Keep focused on your goals.

Dee74 08-07-2015 04:27 PM

Congrats Pete :)

Thanks Leshar - I'm taking it easy :)
