The Temple of Artemis in Ephesus was one of the wonders of the classical world. Completed in the 5th century BC, it had 127 marble columns, each 60 feet high. The Artemis worshipped there was very different from Artemis/Diana of Greece and Rome, a virgin huntress with bow and arrow.
People are fascinated by the spheres that hang all over her like garlands –either breasts or bulls’ testicles, as you like it. Both symbolize fertility.
If you look very closely, she’s crawling with bees.
