Hi! Checking in... Feeling so happy driving to work today when I realized that I don't EVER have to feel hungover on my way to work EVER again! It's all in my hands. Kind of an enlightening moment for me and it felt good. :-)

Casey is it cooler down south today? It's only supposed to be 90 here today which is a pleasant change from 102 yesterday.

So many great posts here! I'm so proud of you Allie! I feel the same way when I start teaching soon again. A school year without any hangovers. I'm so happy about that.
Well, I'll come here at times of course (thank you all for your support). To be honest, once school starts, the luxury of reading and posting here will be quite diminished for awhile. I purposely decided not to work this summer (I have worked in the past every summer for years) so I could focus on getting sober and having less stress. I didn't know it was going to be so bumpy and hard especially in the beginning (much more AV than I anticipated). It's helped me a lot to read the posts of those who have remained sober all this time since May. I'm not shocked when the AV kicks out of the blue at times. And I admire how you've been able to maintain sobriety...no matter what! (yay, Casey).
Wishing all a great day and rest of the week.

Starting day 83. Off work today...hooray! As soon as I finish posting in here and looking over my other two class threads, I'm getting dressed and heading out the door.

Going to end up at a noon AA meeting downtown but plan on making a few stops along the way, including stopping at the local Friends of the Library bookstore to stock up on some more reading material. I don't talk about it much in here but I read a lot. A whole lot. I always have at least two books going at once, and sometimes I go crazy and have four or five going. Currently reading The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton and a nonfiction book about Charles Bukowski's relationship to the Beat writers. Both books are just OK. I'm ready for at least one of them to be over with so I can start something else.

Like I said, noon AA meeting for sure. Then I'll probably meet my step-mother and nephew at the swimming pool for an hour or three. I bet there will also be a late afternoon nap somewhere in the picture. Also going to go to an 8 pm AA meeting as well.

Feeling good today. Three months coming up soon. This is all new territory for me recovery-wise.

Dharma -- The serenity prayer is a rock. Not getting upset that I can't control other people, places, and things most of the time is something I'm constantly working on.

Odisnow -- glad you were able to put up with your phone long enough to post here. I can certainly sympathize with compensating with cookies. If I keep junk food around, I eat it all. Period. My dad has been sober for 32 years now and he definitely switched one addiction--booze--for another--sugary food. It's amazing he's in as good of health as he is considering his awful diet and his constant smoking. Love the man but I sure don't want to emulate those choices.

D122y -- now you've got me wondering what my blood pressure is. Been a long time since I've had it checked. Do those free machines at the pharmacy actually work?

nmd -- So good to hear from you! Congrats on day 5! Hope your expedition is going well.

AllieK -- It is a liberating thought/feeling, isn't it? Remember you don't have to take that first drink today no matter what, and as long as you don't take the first you can't take the second or third or eighth drink that will almost always follow. You're doing great!

I guess technically it's going to be cooler here today. High of only 98 degrees compared to yesterday's 105.

Kale -- glad your summer of sobriety is paying off. I told you this yesterday, but you really are doing so well. Keep on keeping on!

Ok, getting out of here now. Hope everyone has a happy and sober Wednesday!

Good morning guys.....and Welcome D.

I also have ridiculous sugar cravings and have been on an ice cream kick as of late....or Starbucks Frapacinno with whip cream whenever I'm near one. I have gained weight, but I used to be too skinny and barely eat when I was drinking. I looked sort of like a taffy apple....head too big for body. However, since I'm short, I have to nip this thing in the bud ASAP and knock the hell off the sugar, because if I keep going I will be a whale pretty soon. You know when you're short, 5 lbs is huge. I think more exercise would be good too. Also helps with stress.

Have a great day everyone

Wow!! I finally logged on to the computer, this site is completely different from the app, it took me a second to figure it out lol

Casey - I don't think that I could be reading multiple books at the same time, I would have them all mixed up so good for you! I love to read as well but have been slacking lately. Maybe after I finish up with school I will try to get back into it.

Gina - I definitely know what you mean about the 5lbs being huge on a small frame, I think that's exactly how much I've gained in the past week. Starting today, no more junk! I was so excited about losing the alcohol weight and I go and mess it all up adding junk to my diet, now I weigh more than I did when I was drinking. I have been working out just about everyday and totally agree, such a stress reliever and mood booster.

nmd - Congrats on day 5 That is awesome!

Time to get some stuff done. I hope everyone has a great day and enjoys this amazing weather if it is nice where you are. It won't be long before it is cold and the ground is covered in that nasty white stuff again might as well enjoy it while we can

Hi everyone. Been reading, but not posting. I'm not sure what to say, as my life is not very exciting. We went to the lake the other day, that was nice. Going to try to get back again next week. Going to try to get to a zoo too. I always want to do stuff in the summer, but I always end up being broke and it sucks, but I am trying to take the kids at least a couple of places and as I do every year, hope that the next year will be better.

Hope everyone has a great day. I have work later, then I'm off the next 2 days and have no idea what to do with myself. Hopefully I'll figure something out, lol.

Have a great day!!

Friends of the Library bookstore was having a 75% off sale. Got all these books for $10.25 and could have bought a bunch more if I wasn't on my bicycle with only my small shoulder bag. My dad goes every Saturday morning. Perhaps I'll go with him this Saturday so I can buy some more without having to worry about getting them home.

You can see my sobriety chips in the background too. I found a little shadowbox frame last week that I'm mounting them in. I usually keep my keys and wallet where I laid those books down so I see the chips every time I'm getting ready to leave the house. Good reminder of how far I've come and where I'm headed if I keep growing in my recovery. There's enough room in that frame for one year's worth of chips. Can't wait to add the next one on August 8!

Noon AA meeting was good. Topic was acceptance--ie, accepting you're an alcoholic and also (and more importantly for me today) accepting that you can't control other people, places, or things.

Bicycle ride home was long (about 2.75 miles) and hard with those heavy books but it was worth it. Now it's time for a short nap. Not going to the pool until tomorrow. I might go see Ant-Man in a little while. It won't be in IMAX 3-D here after today since the Mission Impossible movie is about to open.

I work out a bit so I dont gain weight much. I'm 6'2" about 215. I want to be around 200 though. That will take a major diet change. Not wanting to count the days. Coming up on 3 months sober. Feeling better every day. Although, once in a while, periodically I feel terrible. I heard that happens less and less though. Thanks.
Casey..I got BP cuff at Walmart. It is nice.

I am reading a new book tonight about make ahead meals that you can freeze so you don't have to cook all week! I hate making dinner during the week. It is the last thing I want to do after a day at work. We end up eating out a lot so hopefully this will help! I am also reading a book about a Buddhist monk. I haven't gotten very far into it yet but I like it so far. I never get to sit down to read until like 9 pm and then reading makes me so tired that I never get very far before I fall asleep. Maybe I can get in some good reading time (with coffee so I don't fall asleep!) this weekend.

I'm a multi reader too - not unusual for me to have 6 or 7 books on the go lol - I think I might just be a little obsessional

Hey everyone,

Thought I'd get into the habit of checking in, as I really like the camaraderie I see here. I'm on day 83, and I just returned home from a BB study, where the focus was the tail end of "How It Works." Always good to hear from the more-experienced folks when it comes to self-will.

As for my day ... well, I took the past few days off for some appointments (I work as a social media specialist), but I found myself itching to get back to work today - even though on Monday I was itching to get to my two days off.

I was able to finish reading Stephen King's new(ish) book "Finders Keepers," and next I'm moving on to "Go Set a Watchmen" by Harper Lee. I find myself with time on my hands (work or not), so I'm looking for groups in my area I can join (book club, mindfulness group, etc).

Anyway, just wanted to say I hope everyone had a great day!

CC

Hi CC, good idea to post regularly. It really helps to keep you focused. Let me know how the Harper Lee book is. I am interested to hear about it. :-)

Starting to wind down day 83. It's been a good day. That bike ride home with my books wore me out a little but, like I said, it was worth it. I didn't go to a movie after that. I'll go tomorrow instead, as I'm also off then.

I got the books properly placed on my shelves--I'm a bit OCD about having them in alphabetical order by author. I used to own upwards of 10,000 books--in fact at one point about 7 years ago, I was living in a small individual house that had separate small apartments upstairs and downstairs. I made a deal with the landlord and rented both apartments for a bit lesser price--I lived upstairs and kept my library and office downstairs. After moving all those books from that place, (had to move because my irresponsibility/alcoholism kept me from paying my bills properly) I swore I'd never move a box of books again so I sold every single one of those books and just read books from the public library for a long time. But now that I'm not living in Austin anymore, I don't have such a great public library to borrow from so I've slowly started accumulating books again. Only have a few hundred now, nothing like my previous horde. I am about at the point where I need to go buy one more bookcase/shelf of some sort sometime soon.

Went to my folk's house for dinner and then to a absolutely FANTASTIC AA meeting. Seriously, I've been going to meetings off and on for 13 years now and this has to be one of the best meetings I've ever been to. Subject was the first half of step one--admitting we're alcoholics. Great mixture of newcomers and oldtimers, and the chair did a great job of getting a good mixture of both to speak. Heard a lot of great stuff and there was just a strong energy of recovery and hope and serenity in the room. Felt good.

Six or seven at a time is a lot. I don't usually venture over five at a time and after juggling that many for two or three weeks, I'll make myself calm down and slowly wean back down to two at a time. Then a month or two later, the count will start creeping up again. It's usually during times like right now when I'm not disliking either book I'm reading but not really loving either one as well that I usually end up picking up another book to add to the mix. Trying not to do that this time and just stick with the two. I'm almost done with Bukowski and the Beats anyways. Only have about 50 pages left.

Haha...looking at that description of my reading in the above paragraph, kinda reminds me of my constant relapses and attempts at moderation in my drinking.

Allie -- The idea of freezing nice meals ahead of time is a smart one. Let us know how some of the meals go! Since I live alone and only cook for myself most of the time, I usually just prepare small meals as I go. I've also been eating out too much lately, need to cut back on that.

ClosetCinephile -- glad to see you posting again and also enjoyed your thread over in the main forum where you got some good (and, honestly, a few not so good) answers to your questions about "the God thing." Gave me a lot to think about. My own concept of a higher power is still pretty vague right now. I believe in whatever it is that got recovering folks that I look up to sober, I guess.

About three years ago, I decided to read all of Stephen King's books in the order they were published since there are a lot of recurring characters and plot lines in them. I only read about one of his books a month--I think the last one I read was the short story collection Everything's Eventual. That was published in 2002, so I probably won't get to Finders Keepers for a year or two more. Only book of his I'm kind of itching to jump forward and read is 11/22/63. I've heard such good things about it and the subject matter floats my boat. But I'm sticking to my plan. The book will be waiting for me when I get to it--in fact, I just counted and it's 11 books away. So I should get to it in the next year.

Haven't decided yet if I want to read the Harper Lee book or not. To Kill a Mockingbird was one of my introductions to the world of adult literature when I was eight or nine years old and I've read it many times since then and still love it. I don't really like the story behind how this "new" novel is finally being published. Not sure if Miss Lee is really aware enough anymore to be giving permission for the publication. Afraid she's being taken advantage of. But I'm sure I'll probably break down at some point and read it.

Morning folks. Quick check-in before work. Awesome book find, Casey! I love books too. Always have. And they have to be real books. I can't read on a kindle or whatever people do these days. I love Steven King as well but haven't read anything of his in a while. Any recommendations for a good book?

Have a good day everyone....I think, according to Casey's day count, this is Day 80 for me. How time flies

Morning Mayflowers!

I've been reading up on posts and it sounds like everyone is doing a great job! I'm a little down today and not sure why... my son's birthday (30 years old)... Hmmm that's it! I'm depressed because if he's 30, then I'm OLD Oh well, I don't feel old, so that's what counts right?

Had a great day yesterday with my 6 year old granddaughter. Promised her a trip to the mall so she could pick out a new backpack and a new school outfit. So much fun shopping for girls. We even snuck in a movie. She picked out Disney's Inside Out... Cute movie, but kinda sad at parts. I'm so lame crying while watching a Disney movie!! lol

Anyway, back to work for me this morning. Starting Day #74. I'm getting a little tired of counting days, but it does keep me focused and on track. I'll keep counting the days until I feel safe. Then, maybe switch to months. We'll see.

Hope you all have a great day!

Hey Surrender.....sorry you're feeling down today. When I turned 50 I was severely depressed about it. Now I'm 52 and I still feel young (most of the time)....I know what you mean though....I look at my nephews and think....wait a damn minute. You were just a toddler and now you're a grown man! WTF happened?!! Time seems to go by exponentially faster as I get older.

Happy birthday to your son And you're as young as you feel (At least I keep telling myself that)

Speaking of feeling old...today I am taking my daughter to high school registration!!! Time goes by so fast.

After that I am taking her to a friends house. Then I have to go to work. I have three meetings this afternoon or else I would ditch. Lol.

My husband is going to a funeral at noon that most likely will end up turning into a bar scene so he probably won't be home until late. Alone again tonight... It's ok though. I could use some quiet time to myself.

I can't read books on a kindle or anything either, which is hilarious when you travel for a living! I only brought 4 books with me this time, but finished them all! Looking forward to getting home as I have a book waiting for me that's hard cover that I couldn't bring, but it came highly recommended.
