waking down

the sweet old dog shakes
her toy but she's too weak and
topples to the floor
wants to be a pup
but takes a digger if she
chases her shadow
i can relate to
shadow chasing and falling
again and again
old bruised bones cling to
weakened tendons and sinew
she wants to play rough
think again girlfriend
you're lucky to take a leak
and not lie in it
this could be my fate
but chances are my heart will
cease to function first
we go slowly or
we drop dead without warning
well i have been warned
i can grieve the past
or hope for a fine future
or just enjoy now
it's not raining so
i think i'll take a walk and
maybe chase a bear
