1977. I’ve been looking forward to 1977 for 2 weeks. The eradication of smallpox!
How bad was smallpox? – I’ll spare you the pictures. Wikipedia: “Of all those infected, 20–60%—and over 80% of infected children—died from the disease. Smallpox was responsible for an estimated 300–500 million deaths during the 20th century.”
This is an editorial note from the CDC: “Some things need be done only once in the entire history of the world. The development of smallpox vaccine and the eradication of smallpox disease are on the list.” ( Smallpox Surveillance -- Worldwide)
The last case of naturally occurring smallpox happened in 1977. Although it required 2 years of surveillance to confirm the eradication, 1977 marks the end of smallpox in the wild.
I wish you health and gratitude!

"Responsibility" was the topic of the AA meeting I attended tonight. Part of my responsibility for my sobriety is to check in here every night. And I am also grateful for the gang of others who sign in here daily!

8:32 PM in the forest.
This is a windy place where I live. One of my garbage cans vanished today. I once had an outside table with an umbrella. I forgot to close the umbrella one day. A neighbor who is a farmer found the umbrella in one of his fields three miles away.
