Hey all --

I don't know how much my classmates visit other sections of SR. (I kind of go in waves here these days.) But I've found that some of our wisest fellow journeyers post from time to time in the "Alcoholism" forum.

This evening, I found one of the most insightful postings I've ever read here. Wanted to share it:

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...-sobriety.html

Oh, and I see we've actually turned over another page here. You'll have to go back to page 7 for the photos.

V.

Yes, a great post. When you take the long view, our paltry year and a half doesn't seem so long. No wonder things aren't perfect yet, haha... Thanks V..

I post quite frequently in Newcomers, to give encouragement, and occasionally in the section on Anxiety issues, since I've had to work through some of that. I kind of forget about the Alcoholism section, I think because I identify my drinking more with self medication for other issues than pure alcoholic addiction and drunken behavior.

Oceanlady, I hope you heal quickly. When your nose doesn't feel quite right it effects your entire being.
I read the forums on this site regularly, even though I don't post much. I enjoy reading posts from people who are are day 1 or year 30. It is such a diverse group but with so many shared experiences.
I continue to run 3-4 times per week and log about 15 miles each week. My relationships with my wife and young daughter continue to grow and are so different than when I was drinking.
I can go days now without reminding myself that I'm an alcoholic or that I used to drink but no longer do. My life as a non-drinker is starting to feel like the "new normal". It's quite pleasant.

Else, youngest grandaughter is taking horse back riding lessons....whenever I watch her my mind goes to you on the other coast!
Saw doc yesterday and removed the two inch splints from each side of snout! Today I'm subbing and tend to catch myself viewing my straight nose frequently! OceanFELLA says I'm not snoring , so I guess surgery was a success .
Daughter posted on Fb that they brought TOM good luck by going to game last week and he wants them to return this week...I posted, TOM must wt girls to spent more time with Grammy and Grampy!! GO PATS!

Orn, like the "new norm" ...so true, tonight I had friends over, my regular happy hour group....out of 8, two had alcohol! I think my stopping drinking has had a ripple effect on others...have you ever watched a normal person sip 4 ounces of wine? I paid attention to one tonight....after an hour one ounce is gone! That may have been one of my handicaps!

I like the new normal, too. Life feels so much better when it's not dictated by a bottle. Still, when I watch a normal person drink, it seems foreign to me.

Hey, Oceanlady, congrats on the Pats going to the Super Bowl! My FB page has been a near-endless stream from disappointed Packers fans for nearly 24 hours! There's been analysis, over-analysis, dismay, expletives, more expletives and sorrow! That's life when you hail from Wisconsin!

Orn, any updates on the trans-oceanic trek? I hope it is back on schedule.

Hi all. Semester has started and so far so good. Today is day 3 no smoking (again) but this time feels different, more hopeful. Instead of focusing on what I'm giving up, I'm focusing on how clean and unencumbered I feel. In truth, it's gotten to where I smoke sometimes even when I don't want to. I feel trapped by it. Am craving big time right now but thinking about where I want to be in six months...a non-smoker. I want to be free of all addictions and not depend on something to make me feel better. I use smoking as a respite from reality, to take a moment before I get going or deal with things. I have been smoking for about 25 years and have been fearful and reluctant to give it up. The unknown is scary. But I hate feeling enslaved to it. I wish I could snap my fingers and be six months in as a non-smoker (of course, says the addict who wants immediate gratification).

Advbike--I love Anthony de Mello. I've read Awareness a couple of times but it has been awhile...you're right...his words jog something in my brain too and make things clearer. I just pulled up a PDF of Awareness on my iPad so I can read snatches of it more frequently when I'm feeling nutty! Kind of like now as I'm going through nicotine withdrawals!!!

OL and Else, hope you are both feeling better and better post-surgery. V, love those photos! I hope you find them all

Dee, I saw on a thread in the newcomers that you had been under the weather too with a toothache. Hope you're healed up.

Am trying a new recipe tonight...have a pork loin in the oven.

I went back and read journal entries from June and July when I was trying to quit smoking. I still want to quit for all the reasons I listed. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Come to think of it, I think I started talking about quitting in February of last year. It is time.

Yes, the trip is back on for later this year. We'll sail from the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands in early September and do the ocean crossing starting in mid-Novrmber.
I'm in Ireland this week on business. I arrived yesterday and get to go home Thursday morning. It's unseasonably cold here in Cork. I had time yesterday to go out to the coast and watch the waves.

Kadidee, sounds like you are ready to stop smoking and for a sound reason too. It's interesting how we view our other habits and addictions after we stop drinking.

Good luck Kati as you attack and conquer smoking just as you did alcohol. I am going to use that same method on stopping my "I deserve it" shopping. During the fall I seem to slip into rewarding myself with jewelry, luggage, clothes ect....I just looked at my credit card and fainted! Never have I been so reckless ! AV made me do it!!! I've developed a new budget and using everything I've learned from reform!!!

Yes ! PATS NATION is ridding high! I also wish GB had won! Fear Seattle!

Oceanlady, I used to find that my other obsessions such as with cars or motorcycles would ramp up when I was in not drinking.. to the extent that I made more than one expensive toy purchase in early sobriety. And sometimes would relapse while "celebrating", lol.

I talked at length with my psychologist about it and he said it's the addiction just finding another path, something else to get obsessed about. For me, removing my method of self-medicating just allowed me to get wound up over something else.

Tolle, in "A New Earth", also refers to the ego's need to create "wants" as being very important to the way we identify ourselves, identity being such a big part of the role of the ego of course. The wanting often being even more important than the getting, which usually provides only brief satisfaction. For me it was very true.

So true Adv! I never realized what an addictive personality I have...and yes, just looking for something to be addicted to to give me pleasure!
Today started diet for Florida, snowshoed for exercise and continued my plan to only buy what I have cash for!
I have learned so much about who I am this past 17 months...wish I had know me earlier!

Really glad to hear your news about the trip, Orn. Nice that you got to enjoy a little bit of Ireland during a break from business.

Hi Kadi, I'm really glad you're tackling the smoking. It's tough, but doable, and you will feel so much better. Maybe take up running as a healthier addiction. Have you considered nicotine patches?

I download all my books via the kindle app as I can't get deliveries here without spending an arm and a leg. Plus, I can read on both my phone and tablet.
