Do you have a totem animal or familiar spirit? Tonight, the butterflly, especially for Altoids, although I think we can all identify with the butterfly as a symbol of transformation. The butterfly life cycle goes from egg to larva (caterpillar) to pupa or chrysalis, emerging from the chrysalis as the winged adult form called the imago, which may live as briefly as 1 week or as long as a year.

As a spirit animal, the butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis, rebirth and renewal, the stages of life, and spirituality. Psyche, the Greek goddess whose name means mind/soul/spirit, is usually depicted with butterfly wings.

Below is a Painted Jezebel butterfly, which uses aposematism to indicate to potential predators that it is full of acids that are not good to eat. Many butterflies use bright colors and distinctive patterns to warn away predators.



Below is the Common Mormon butterfly, an example of butterfly mimicry. It does not contain unpalatable acids, so it's evolved wing patterns that imitate the Common Rose butterfly, which does:
