These Things Take Time
You know giving up alcohol and or drugs is only the start of our journey towards a successful
life. It is the first step but there will be plenty more work ahead. There will be all types of
challenges that we will face after we become sober.
I believe one of the reasons we fell into addiction in the first place was because we were unable
to cope with life. So in recovery we will need to develop more effective coping skills.
Boredom is going to be a big trigger in the beginning. We spent a lot of time drinking and or
drugging. We will need to find new activities we enjoy with which we can spend our free time.
We will probably have to walk away from old drinking or drugging buddies. We need to build a
new support network in recovery.
Dealing with our character flaws is also going to be a challenge for us for I believe these flaws
drove us into our addiction in the first place.
Emotional sobriety comes with doing a self examination of these flaws, learning new coping skills
so we can respond in healthier ways rather than reacting to everything that comes our
way by running to the bottle or drugs.
We will have set backs but we don't need to be discouraged. If we are staying sober then
it has been a good day.
And if we continue to do the next right thing I believe the next right thing will happen.
Let's learn from yesterday and move on.
So who's in? Are you in?
