Resentments
Having and holding resentments can be really dangerous to us in recovery
at any time.
Again, it goes back to having high expectations of others.
People are going to do things we do not like. Today, tomorrow and in the future.
The sooner we accept our powerlessness over other people the happier we will be.
The only person we can change is ourselves and holding a grudge is hurting us
more than anyone else.
Resentments can lead us to a relapse if we don't let it go.
How do we let it go?
Well for me I pray for the person I am holding a resentment towards. Don't
get me wrong, I don't do it right away. I am human and I dwell on it for awhile
and make myself miserable.
It is usually the thing I do when I have already driven myself crazy about it and
realize that I'd better change something or I am gonna do something I will regret.
Bitterness and vengeance takes away my own peace.
I may think holding onto to it is hurting the other person but that is far from
the truth. The other person is going on about their merry life and I am the one
who is eating the poison of my resentments.
Something about praying for another person whom we have a resentment towards.
It's hard as heck to do when we are feeling bitter. But when we do it regardless over
and over for days at a time. Something amazing happens.
Our own hearts are actually softened. So the prayers we are saying for that person
are actually benefiting us as well.
Try it!
I also try to remember that I am not a Saint and until I have walked a mile in
someone else's shoes I have no idea what anyone else is going through or why they
behave in a certain way so I really need to practice patience and tolerance.
Before I hit them upside the head. lol kidding!
