Welcome, md4606! Yep, the AV is deaf, blind and has no limbs with which to move. It just has that voice. It's also known as "the beast". In AVRT, it's my understanding that the theory is to not get into a discussion with it but to ignore it, hard as that may seem at times. The beast can sing quite the siren song. I suspect it's a way to visualize those powerful feelings within us that lead us to drink. By picturing it as a legless, blind, ugly critter that can only talk to us, it is a way of helping us to realize that the AV is not all powerful nor is it attractive or desirable.

In another thread we like to yell "shotgun!" if we are first, to signify that we get to ride next to the driver of the bus :-). It is a game to see who can ride shotgun each time there is a new thread :-)

Hold your hand up in front of your face.

Wiggle your fingers

Now, tell the Beast you'll go get some booze if IT can wiggle your fingers.

Crickets will chirp while you wait.

I have read up on AVRT on the secular forums and read through the whole rational recovery web site. I find that it is very similar to what I did intuitively during the 5 years of my last sober period. Instead of the beat I called it my whiskey monster. Same concept different name. I was able to suppress it for a long time until I got complacent and forgot that I can't handle even just one because then I want them all. I am going to use this strategy going forward only this time I actually have the system to follow so I can go back to it as needed. That and last time I didn't have a forum like this to come to for feedback. Another member sent me a pm on other info on the program that I can share with you if you would like and there is also a sticky on the top of the secular forum called secular web with links to rational recovery and other secular recovery programs.

AV is the Addictive Voice that the Beast uses to try to get you to give IT what it wants. And what IT wants is anything that gives it deep pleasure like booze and drugs. The Beast is the addicted part of your brain.

Thanks for explaining AV, I was wondering also. My beast has a tatoo on it's chest of a skull and crossbones ever reminding me not to put that poison in my body.
Help me here: when I get a text that such and such replied to something I said it refers me to a link to clink on. When I clink on that link I never know where to go? Can you help, I'm new to the group!
