Thanks for sharing that with us JS.

I just reread mine and it has helped me focus. I came here on a quit drinking or get out ultimatum so I have everything on the line here especially a 30+ year marriage.

Here is the last line from my post.
After 40+years of almost constant drinking it will truly be the challenge of my lifetime and with my married life at stake it is something I must conquer.

I think this is a good exercise. At least it is for me.
After this it is back to the frivolity.

Good morning class - I like this assignment and will complete it in a few hours - have an appointment this AM that I have to get to but want to check in with class first.

Yes - will see Michigan State tomorrow night! and Alissa DeHahn was amazing in the win over Duke (loved seeing that win!) - will be very interesting to see how they pair up with Iowa State. They seem confident and capable.

Will be back in class in a few hours.. morning hug to all :ghug

Good assignment Fubar. I have several appointments to keep today, one of them being the bean counter (tax time) so I will have to put my schoolwork on hold for the moment. I will try to get back later, or tomorrow, and get up to date.

Have a good day everyone. Please note that tax preparation drives me nuts and to drink but this year it will just be nuts.

Hi all,
It's finally friday. And I have to get into this conversation as I work for a government contract that processes immigrant visas. People (especially americans) are closed minded to the realities of the rest of the world. Quick to judge immigrants without knowing the facts. Fighting for immigration reform without even knowing what it actually takes to migrate to the U.S.

Another subject I have a very strong opinion about.

Not fooled by the media.

OK teach - I did my assignment and also got caught up in reading through a lot of the first thread - wow have we come a long way in a few months! This is an inspired assignment Fubar - really hits the heart..

I posted here in early January but finally made the commitment on January 11 - .. At that time I was just fed up with dancing around drinking wine - I was coming off a 3 week relapse after having had over 40 days in (wow - now it is closer to 80 days in!)..

I got kind of emotional reading through all of our early posts - drinking is such a drag and we all are working so hard not to be dragged into the life of drinking our selves to death.

I did not realize how many of the early Januarians I don't have contact with any more.. I come to only a handful of threads each day and must be missing them elsewhere. This thread is clearly my lifeline.

I just love all of you who are part of this on a daily (or almost daily basis).. I know you are there for me and that I am there for you.. I truly don't think I could have gotten to this point without our class!

OK - big b-ball weekend but will log in from time to time.. Fubar - you get Survivor back next week..

We are having unbelievable weather here in the SF area - spring like and warm, not even real windy.. Hopefully a tease and not the end of our rainy season (we need a few more storms really bad).

Planting some veggies this weekend and hopefully getting on our bikes for a good ride.

:ghug

Mamabin & others,
I have another Africa story with a Michigan State University connection - a little bit of a tear jerker too.

There is a player on the MSU basketball team, Idong Ibok. He is from Lagos, Nigeria. He played basketball for 1 year in the states as a HS Senior, and then was recruited to play at MSU.

He is now a senior at State - he doesn't play much, but had a few very good games in his career. I believe he has been on the Academic All-Big Ten team all 4 years at State.

Mamabin - here is your part: Idong has not been home to Nigeria or seen any family for 6 years. He is afraid that if he goes back that the Nigeria Gov. will not let him back out. And his mother has never seen him play BBall in college because they won't let her out - they know that she wouldn't come back. Just terrible!

Now the tear jerker part: At the last home game of the season, there is a ceremony after the game introducing the Seniors. They walk out to center court with their mothers & fathers as they are introduced. Well we know where Idong's mother is (I think father has passed). So Idong called Coach Tom Izzo's wife and asked her if she would escort him to center court. I guess both her and Tom got very emotional (I did too when I read this). Tom and his wife & family have been his only family the past 4 years.

And you may be able to see Idong as MSU is set to throttle Kansas tonite at 9:37. Check your local listings. Idong should play - to try and stop their big man, Aldrich. Well see. OK - Enough Basketball.

I'll start working on my assignment.

My first post was mid-late Jan. I had tried to stop drinking right after New Years - I had a little success - 6 days here, 3 days there. Then i found SR. I slipped the Thursday before Superbowl and on Superbowl. After Superbowl, I was sober for 34 days - longest sober stretch in 15 years. I've been on and off since then.

The next week will be tough - basketball, kids spring break, the Beach - tough. And won't have much time or access to chat with ya'll. I'll try and be good. I need to get back on the wagon!!!!

Take care, Jackstone

Good morning comrades in arms.
Another week has come and gone. How time flies when you are having fun.
I am thinking of finally getting started on doing other things. I think I will go se a movie. "I love you man." tonight. It isn't much but it is a start.
The tolerance thing is going a little better so I may pick another area of improvement to start working on. Pretty soon I will be perfect.
Have a healthy and sober and sugar free day one and all. I had to put the OS plug in. It is a little lonely over there.

Good morning Fub and Oz (sleeping now) and all the rest of you.

Michigan State pulled it off - the best game of the sweet 16.. JT - Thought of your story about Ibok when they showed shots of Tom and Lupe Izzo.. Hoping they pull off another win against Louisville on Sunday - yes!

Fub - let us know how I Love You Man is - I love good comedy and there is too little of it - laughter feels so good..

Should be a fun weekend here - b-ball and gardening (both in my top 10).

Had a good chat with my older sister who has almost 30 years of complete abstinence after being a pretty serious alcoholic - she is a very dedicated member of AA (I am not), and quite religious (I am not) but she is really accepting of multiple paths.. Here we both are at a point in our sobriety where we are really looking at what we get from not drinking.. the feeling that the sober life is a real treasure in itself.. I felt very lucky to have a sister who I could have that discussion with.. She has been good to know over the years - living a life without any substances for so long.

Have a good sober weekend all you Januarians.. :ghug

Happy Saturday all,
I made it through another week. And went to work every day! I'm actually proud of that. I have a doctor's appointment in a bit and hopefully I can get my meds straightened out.

Quiet day, I'll probably check the chat room later.

Hey Jackstone, I remember a basketball player from Nigeria back in the 80's. The guy must've been 8 feet tall.

And I hear from alot of people who can't get back into their countries. And it's difficult for them to bring their families here, even for a visit. Of course we'll let someone in with extraordinary abilities, ahead of people who are suffering. But that's just the way it is. We are very fortunate to have been born here. I've also worked with foreigners who have menial jobs and people don't realize that in their country, they were doctors, scientists, etc. We treat them like plain refugees and nothing else.

People assume way too much.

Have a great Saturday all! And stay out of trouble!

Don't do anything I wouldn't do
