So what is a 'hand' measurement for horses? And why don't they call it a 'hoof' since horses don't have hands?

A hand is 4" and it is international. We used it in South Africa where I grew up, here in England, and even you in the States have adopted it without changing it - it makes a change, after what you did to the English language

Makes me remember that part of the movie MY FAIR LADY, with Rex Harrison singing "Why can't the English... learn to speak". The part where he says, "... in America they haven't used it in years!" Yes, the USA usurped the english language and beat it into submission!

Now we speak "american" here, cause any relationship with the true english language is long gone. Sarah Palin proved that without a doubt! ...or, as Rex Harrison said, "... the cold blooded murder of the english tongue..."

I'm lucky enough to be one of only eight lighthouse keepers working in Scotland still.

Our lighthouse is more of a museum for tourists these days to be honest.

Yes, we can still work at manually when required but an automatic one is already in service to replace us, if or when the tourists dry up .................

There are 51 lighthouses in Scotland but most of them are automated remotally, as I say only 8 actual keepers left.

Not a word of a lie Fizzy - my grandad was one of the last manual light house keepers left in South Africa. He was also an alcoholic, surname Hughes (welsh) - are we related?

His last light house was on the Strand in Cape Town. My grandmother then left him - he was very violent. They started off in Namibia when it was originally South West Africa and owned by Germany. Every two years, they were moved down the coast.

One of the lighthouses was on Dassen Island, which is just a bit further south than Robyn Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for so long). My mum and her sisters used to go to boarding school on the main land by tug boat!! It was just them and the penguins on that island!
