Smile Exercise can make you happier

Interesting study about exercise, even just a little, having a positive effect on mood. I know I feel more cheerful after a dog walk.

I love walking, and I'm inspired by using a Fitbit and earning Sprouts gift cards that my employer provides as incentives when we reach milestones.

It's true! Thanks for the reminder, 'cause I needed it. Just walking up & down the stairs a few times a day isn't cutting it.

Join the road to summer thread! We just post whatever exercise or activity we do and show support. It does seem to help!

YES!

do get out, do something active every day! Join a fitness club or sport whatever, get exhausted from sport or fitness.

DONT SIT AT HOME!

Its the only proven thing that keeps my mind from eating itself and one of the methods to stop drinking.

When in the midst of a dense depression it's very difficult to get out of bed, let alone move.

It's true for me that getting up and moving, particularly outside, can help the depression start to lift.

Start small. If you can't get up out of bed, get up and move to a chair. If you're up and about, try and sitting outside. If there, try walking down the street. Keep expanding your reach slowly.

You're not going to get up and run a marathon. And you'll make yourself guilty if you have those expectations. Just try greeting a sunny day by spending a little time with it.

I loved reading this. It was a reminder of where I was at 13 years ago. I started by walking to a local school and walking laps around the track. A couple weeks later I was taking my road bike out again. Nowadays, I can't hike enough or get enough sunshine, I love being outdoors. And being outdoors without a cooler full of beer and a bottle of liquor is a miracle.

Now Spring is here I have started doing my grocery shopping by foot. It means regular 2 mile walks with a couple of heavy bags but I do feel good afterwards. I hate the gym but there is something about being outdoors getting exercise and being productive at the same time makes me feel good.

(I suffer from anxiety)

Now that I've finally decided to live clean and sober for the first time in my life, and because I totally love irony, some pretty painful shoulder injuries are holding me back. I could be working out so hard every day if not for these nagging injuries. It's probably the universe telling me to start walking and running though.

Being bipolar, it's almost impossible to exercise when I'm in a mixed-state, which is too often. I'm agitated with tons of energy, normally perfect time to work out, but I cannot concentrate enough or make up my mind on the first thing I need to do. This is exactly when I would usually give up and start cocktail hour up again. Can't do that now. Time to find other ways to cope. Loads of fun!

Thanks for starting this thread, Least.

I absolutely notice a difference in my life since starting to make walking a part of my routine; when I skip walking for a period, I notice a difference (more knee pain, more of a sullen attitude). Never underestimate the power of endorphins, lol.

Another plus is that my dog is thrilled to get out and walk; just witnessing his excitement at getting out and about and how he prances alongside as we walk makes me smile. He's a motivator, for sure.

Finally getting back in our pool for
my daily exercise to shed those extra
pounds gained during the Winter.

I use my stretch chords for leg
and arm exercises then my noodle
bicycle to tread around the pool.

Nothing makes me feel better than
taking a dip in the pool to cool off
that body heat that comes with getting
older.

Refreshing, invigorating, energizing,
serenity, all while enjoying my flower
beds that surrounding the pool. So
much varieties and color to keep me
entertained.

Good for the heart, soul and mind.

Good topic Seren. Thank you...!!!!

For me, the corollary to "Exercise can make you happier" is that a lack of it can make me grumpy.
