How old are you? I assumed that conditions like Aspergers are usually diagnosed early in life.... Like early childhood?

I'm pretty sure I would have been diagnosed with Asperger's as a child, if it only it had been invented back then (I'm mid-40's now).

I still have some traits, but they've lessened somewhat with age & with generally having better coping-with-life strategies now. These days they're part of who I am & I wouldn't want to change them.

Jess ~ I just saw this thread.

My nephew has Asperger's, and I have done my best to help my sister understand his feelings and needs....at the very least, the world seems to be more knowledgeable about Asperger's these days....I imagine there are a lot of people here who will be able to relate.

You have friends here who care.

Sadly I wasn't diagnosed as a child as it would have helped me manage life very differently.... Aspergers is at the low end of the autism spectrum and not always obvious to others. I'm now in my 40s. Things are very different now and there's much more ararenesss to pick up the signs earlier in life and help these kids out.

Thank you Venuscat. Your nephew is lucky he has you looking out for him and he has been diagnosed as a child. Some things are harder for Aspies but in other things we excell... hopefully he can find and channel his strengths rather than focussing on the things that he struggles with.

Absolutely Jessie ~ that's what he has done.

He is a brilliant hockey player and an excellent design engineer. Whatever it's called...dealing with intense emotions is not easy for him and may not ever be, but he has strategies to cope and people in his life who get it. ♥

Same, Andy. I have a 13 year-old son who was diagnosed and I see many of the same traits that I did at his age. Not completely clear on how adults (I'm 51) are treated given the prevalence of identifying this in children. I think that many other diagnoses (e.g., anxiety, depression, addiction) are concomitant with Asperger's. In a like fashion I've had to adapt but alas, in the analytical frustration and retreat I found alcoholic behaviour

That will do wonders for his self esteem. Self doubt I'd often part of the package. Wonderful he has such support around him.
I spent a lot of time alone in my room reading in my younger years and then as a teen discovered how much easier socialising was with alcohol.... 25 years later ended up in a sorry state...
that was then and now I'm looking forward and onwards...
