Remembering CarolD

When I first came to SR CarolD seemed intimidating.

When I got to know her, she was anything but

We spent a lot of time together in what she laughingly called the graveyard shift here.

I learned about her life - the teenage years, being a military wife, raising children, divorcing, then working several jobs to make ends meet, moving around the US, the wild years and her recovery - and then the challenges of age, her increasing blindness and her struggles to stop smoking...or at least cut back.....

I heard about the good times and the bad, and about the journey that took her first to AA and then here to SR - she looked back on it all, good and bad, with good humour.

I remember how she loved her life and her friends, and how right til the end she still loved to get gussied up and go out and be amongst people.

The one thing I will remember most about Carol though - and the thing I try to emulate - is her courage.

She never faltered in her determination of what was the right thing to do or say, even when that might prove unpopular.

She lived her recovery and her faith, out in the way she acted.

One thing she used to say that stays with me:

God and I are best friends.
I am pocketbook poor.......spiritually rich.
She never complained about her health - and she gave most of her day, every day, over to helping people here, using a text to speech programme to help her stay connected here.

Incredible dedication. Her last post here was to tell us mods she'd fallen and was off to the hospital....

Even tho its a few years now since she passed, there is still a CarolD cyber-presence here to inspire and educate and I'm glad about that.

RIP Carol

When I first arrived here (shaking & sick) Carol reached out to me. We talked about all the 'party' places in Ocean City, Maryland - where I was living at the time. It was so difficult to avoid temptation. Her understanding & compassion calmed me down. She turned my tears to laughter. I knew if she had made it out of the trap, I could too.

The one thing she said that I will always carry with me is - you've got to want to be sober more than you want to drink. I miss you Carol and am glad I knew you.

Carol had a son that was missing for many years, much like mine except her son had been missing longer. At one of my low periods I asked Carol how she did it. How did she handle her son missing and not knowing if he was even alive?

She replied that she said a prayer each morning and asked God to take care of him...and then she pictured her son sitting on a beach somewhere.

I began doing that too and it helped. Just giving my son's care to God took such a load off my heart. Carol gave me the courage to do that, and the faith needed to keep doing it.

About a year later, her son came home....he had been living at a big beach in Florida all those years.

Carol was my friend and my mentor, her courage and faith helped me find my own. She was funny and could make me laugh until I hurt, she was a southern lady always. She was perhaps the most honest person I have ever known, a person who lived and shared her recovery with grace.

I will always miss Carol, and each time I get stuck in my life I can hear her call out "Forward We Go!".

Thank you, Carol, for shining your light when I could not find my own.

And thank you, Dee, for starting this forum. Some people should just never be forgotten.

Although I didn’t know Carol, FBL mentioned her as being one of the first people he met here, on a radio interview he gave.
I’m sure I would have truly liked and warmed to her.

Mags, you would have loved her, everyone did, and she would have loved you too. If you sit quietly most days, you can feel her presence here. Her spirit lives in the hearts of everyone who knew her, and in those who didn't through us, I think.

R.I.P. Carol, the message continues.

oh wow CaroldD was one of the first people who greeted me here and inspired me. I loved her saying 'each day sober is a victory' and when she wrote to me she would sign it 'your sister in recovery' Just a beautiful woman. Thank you for your life. Can definitely still feel her presence.

Carol and Morning Glory did set the pace for SR. SR is a fair and equal place for addiction recovery. Those lades seen to that. And have passed down the awesome responsibility to keep SR a friendly place to find support. I'm indescribably impressed what an online-addiction recovery website can do to change the very person I was to a person that I cherish and hope to progress to be. C& MD saw to that even they will never know the grateful blessed impact they made on me. I may be nuts but I have a great memory.
