Escaping a Relapse - poem

I wrote this years ago. I'm 18 days sober today and in a very different place, but it helps to look back on it. I relapsed when I was happy. It's good to remember it can catch us when we least expect it.

Dear Witch,

While you were sleeping
I found your angle-grinder in the cellar.
Iím sorry to escape this way.
I left you some wine in the fridge.

Iíll admit I turned my gaze from you
for a moment, while I was laughing.
Your claws crept into my back
and before I knew it I was back
In your gingerbread house.

Your prison felt so safe.
So sweet.
But it was dark.

The only way I could imagine
the stars was to close my eyes
and forget me. Forget you.

To remember a connection
to more than I could see.
And with your angle-grinder
I broke free.
