And that was when he was still a few lbs overweight. His little 'wilderness diet' got him down to his ideal weight - 30 lbs. He was a handsome fella. I got so many compliments on him. So many people thought he was a little Husky. I introduced a lot of people to the Shiba Inu.

There is something about the solidity of a heavy hound that is extra comforting, isn't there? When Ned passed, I still had Daisy, and then soon Russia came to me, but they are both 30-lb little girls, and Russia in particular seems to be weightless, like a little piece of thistle fluff w/her very soft and fluffy fur like cat fur more than dog fur. I missed the warm soft weight of him curled up in bed w/me, the way he was my rock and my anchor against all storms.

When Frank the Tank came thundering into my life, there was once again a 50-lb lump of hound to lie in bed w/me and to crawl up onto my chest so I would wake up thinking "it feels like I can't breathe, almost like there's a 50-lb hound laying on my chest..." and of course there WOULD be...

Jack always slept at my feet, right up until his last months when he started sleeping in the bathroom. I could feel his warm bulk against my feet and it was comforting.

At bedtime he'd climb the little steps up to the bed. He knew they were there for him. At first I had to guide him up the steps but then he knew and went up by himself.

He really did have some serious doggie dementia going on his last year. Often had to lead him to his dish or rescue him from being stuck in a corner of a room. sigh...

I love Ned's nose in your avatar. The long nose and long ears give him a soulful look.

I have that same photo framed as an 8 x 10 on my dresser. My handsome honey boy...

I had those same realizations about Ned in his last months. least. He needed a series of encouragements to get across the kitchen to the door. On occasion, he'd stand and look at his food dish as if he wasn't quite sure what to do with it. And he never did learn how to come to the END of the ramp, once he couldn't do stairs any more--he always came around the SIDE, where of course he couldn't get onto it, and I'd have to come guide him around the proper way.

While it was all going on, I didn't really think that much of it. Looking back, he was indeed struggling, mentally and physically, for quite some time. That's why what my vet said struck me with such force: "Dogs are amazing, tough animals and will try SO HARD to do what we want them to do." I wonder if he would have let go sooner if I hadn't needed him with me so much--he was definitely part of the reason I was able to get through the end of my marriage and all that that entailed. I knew I could count on my Honey Pig, Ned (yes, my embarrassing pet name for him is my name here at SR, for those of you who didn't know...).

Dogs are indeed amazing, tough animals and they absolutely make life worth living.

It really hurts to look at the picture of the triumvirate on my computer. To think that all I have of them now is pictures and memories.

It's the end of my world, as I know it...

Makes me think of Meryl Streep's line in Out of Africa, that the world is round to keep you from seeing too far down the road.

It's the only way I can be creative. I'd love to write a poem for Jack but the first line won't come to me.

I've always liked haiku. Melodic and succinct.

It's amazing how much space a medium-sized dog can actually occupy, isn't it...

Hugs, my friend.
