Least, your poem is beautiful and it made me cry. I hear you in it, and the love you always had for Jack and will always have. Your sweet old man.

That's beautiful, Suki. I almost missed out on getting to know dogs - we always had cats when I was growing up. MrH had several when we met - & it took some adjusting. Now I'm the one who insists we need another dog to make our family whole again.

Hev, that sounds like me. We grew up with cats and didn't get our first family dog until I was 14 when we moved to Ohio. He was a beagle mix we named Sandy. He was so smart and my sister taught him tricks.

It was then that I got my love of dogs. Good ol' Sandy.

Today is 8 months since Jack died. I miss him and yet am familiar with his absence now. Funny how we measure time after a catastrophe.

Rest in peace Jack. Lily and I miss you terribly.

Nine months to the day since he died. I treasure my memories of him and his little quirks. Jack, you're still my soulmate.

Sorrow is halved when it is shared. I have grown used to his absence. Seems like long ago that we were together. And at the same time, like it was just yesterday. Time is such a fluid concept and open to our perception of it. Some days are endless, some years go by in the blink of an eye.

Dammit, I sure do miss my sweet old man. He slept on my bed his first night here? He did. He knew he was safe and welcome. He always slept at my feet, in a spot that came to be Jack's Dip. A little circle in the mattress with a little depression in it. I used to feel his bulk up against my feet at night and it was comforting to know he was there.

Kathy, he likes tummy rubs.

While I'm thankful to have the pain lessen, I feel bad when I don't think of Jackpot all the time. It's natural to not dwell on it after a while, but I never want to forget his sweetness & love for us.

I share the feelings expressed in both of these posts. We love them so deeply while they are with us, and we feel the pain of their loss so intensely, it just doesn't seem possible that we'd ever spend a minute, let alone a whole day, w/o thinking of them. But that's what happens--I've been through this w/Simon, Major, Sam and Ned in the last 15 years, and knowing in my mind that I'll live through it and the pain will lessen has not helped one iota at the time of the loss.

We miss them, we grieve the loss, and slowly, imperceptibly, Life creeps back in and we go on to love and be loved by other animal friends, and to understand that this in no way diminishes our love for the one who's gone.

It's about 10 years since my Toby died, and yet I think of him often and talk to his picture on the fridge. Each time I cook a turkey I can see him sitting by the oven window, drooling on my floor, until it is done and he gets his share.

Jack, Jackpot, Miss Tilly, Toby and all our loved furkids here, are somewhere talking about us too, I think it works that way.

Special hugs, Least, we all miss Jack too.

Yes, Ann - I'm sure you're right.
