For all of us who've lost someone we loved, regardless of whether 4-legged or 2-legged:

The earth is all that lasts.
The earth is what I speak to when
I do not understand my life
Nor why I am not heard.

The earth answers me with the same song
That it sang for my fathers when
Their tears covered up the sun.

The earth sings a song of gladness.
The earth sings a song of praise.
The earth rises up and laughs at me
Each time that I forget

How spring begins with winter
And death begins with birth.

Thinking back on Jack's last few weeks and realizing how much he was struggling. I'm glad he's not struggling anymore.

Going downstairs with Billie just now and realizing how risky it was every time I'd help Jack go downstairs. I never thought about the risk, just automatically helped him down the stairs.

I am missing him a lot lately. I think of my canine triumvirate in heaven, waiting for me. Makes dying a lot less scary, to know I'll see them again.

least, I checked out a book from my library called "Old Faithful: Dogs of a Certain Age" by Pete Thorne. If you can get a hold of a copy, I think you might like it too. Of course it tugs at your heartstrings, but the pictures of those sometimes wise, sometimes goofy, faces are just priceless.

I just reserved it from my library. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, I miss my sweet old man terribly. This March it will be a year since you lost Ned. It seems unfair that life goes on when it stopped for your beloved Ned. The only thing that consoles me is that we'll get to see them again in the next life.

Thanks, HP.

I don't think I could have stood to lose Neddy if I didn't have Daisy to still take care of, and then Russia came along and then Frank the Tank. It is so terrible hard when the ones we love go on ahead of us, but as long as there are other ones who I can take in, who I can give shelter and love to, then I will be able to stand it somehow. I need to be here for the next one, whoever they may be. I know I won't love them exactly the same as the one who's gone, but I know I WILL love them, and I hope they will be happy, contented and love me too.

Jack never chased my cats. He was a perfect gentleman with them and they were not afraid of him. His best buddy was my cat Lily, who used to love on him all the time.

Sorry you lost Mrs Tilly.

Well - as I just told Least, I had a bit of a meltdown today. I was going through some stuff & came across a book I read 10+ yrs. ago by poet/writer Mark Doty called 'Dog Years'. A highly recommended heart-tugger. It's about he & his partner loving & losing their 2 dogs to old age. It's beautifully written. I tried to read parts of it to MrHev but couldn't even get through it. He doesn't understand why I would re-read something that makes me so upset, but I just had the need to indulge myself with a good cry. One month & a few days after Jackpot's departure, I thought I was doing well - but I'm still missing him so much.

At the end of the book, dogs both now gone, the author makes the comment that he and his partner are feeling 'unanchored', even as they go out & try to distract themselves. That - "For 16 yrs. there's been someone at home, waiting to go for a walk". I feel a little lost today. I don't think Jack would mind me sharing this on his thread.

Love to all.

Sending a hug, Hevyn. It's hard for me to believe that it's nearly a year since Ned went on...I really didn't know how I could live w/o my sweet soft boy. I still talk to him, sometimes feel his presence, sometimes almost seem to see him as a shadow just beyond Frank the Tank, the current House Basset.

We love them so very, very much...

Hev, Jack doesn't mind that you share your feelings here.

That's what this thread is for, our feelings.

I still like Soberwolf's signature: To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. That makes me feel a bit better to know they'll always live in our hearts.

Hevyn - the blog-post at this link includes a poem, Things to do after your dog has died :

https://www.patriciamcconnell.com/th...r-dog-has-died

I trust any tears it evokes will bring the reader healing.

Sympathy.

Thank you, Caramel - it was wonderful, & I enjoyed the comments too. Knowing others have had the very same feelings dulls the pain.

Love the poem. Made me think of Jack and remember the soft feel of his fur.

Thank you Caramel.

Sorry I have been so long, stopping by here. I just wanted to drop off hugs for each one of you...and a message from my dear Toby, also in the great beyond.

Toby says that Ned's a dear and comforts all of them and Jack is very smart and playful and that Jackpot has them all rolling with stories of the monster porcupine! Toby is glad to have another cat-friend and Miss Tilly is joining right in with the gang.

Toby and I need to talk more often, he's been busy making new friends but is glad that we all know how much they all loved us.

Hugs from beyond...

I am quite sure they are having fun up in heaven. Jack was playful when he was younger so I know he's playing now.

As St Augustine said, do not seek to understand so that you may believe, but believe, that you may understand.
