Gratitude
I have always loved the Gratitude lists from my first days of Sobriety all the way until now. They have always been helpful tools when I am struggling or doing step-work. They have changed as the years have progressed.
Early on every Gratitude List had things on it about being free, like being able to simply walk into a store. I was fresh out of prison and my gratitude lists reflected that.
Now, most of my lists are almost identical to this:
I am Grateful
for the relationship I have with my son,
that I am clean and sober today,
that I have a life worth living,
for my sponsor,
for my friends in recovery,
that I have step work in my life,
that I have a job that allows me to help people,
that I have the career I dreamed of when I was a kid,
that I have my own apartment,
that I can pay my bills, that I have my license,
that I am in good health,
and that I have a relationship a God of my understanding.
My life has changed dramatically in the last three years. I earned two degrees, graduated from a esteemed university with highest honors, I completed intense research programs. I now have a son. I have two publications in a Harvard Journal. I also have a career. Life continuously gets better a day at a time.
I did not imagine that it could or would in those first days, but I held on, and sometimes I am still just holding on. However, there is more than enough evidence in my list that shows me that miracles happen as long as you are following a program to the best of your ability.
