Perks of Being a Wallflower

I watched this movie the other night. Although it's not a movie about addiction, there is a theme of relationships, some drinking and drug use. At one point in the movie, the main character asks his sister why she stays with her boyfriend, after witnessing him slapping her across the face? She says she can handle it. Then he asks his friend, "Why do we continue to choose partners who are bad for us?"
(Now here's my favorite line from the movie...)

The friend says "We accept the love we feel we deserve."

My take on it is this. Maybe something in our childhood or past relationship made us believe we weren't worthy of real love or continuous love?

Food for thought...

Your post strikes a chord here, and yes, I believe what the friend said.

The hard part is the self-help needed to feel worthy of love and respect.

Thank you for posting this.

Yes, I absolutely agree! That is why it's so important to get counseling and face to face help so we can see that we deserve more, and when put in a situation we can absolutely stand up for ourselves and do what is right for ourselves, not what the codependency tells us instead!
