Engaged to an addict, help!

My little girl's dad is a heroin addict.
We meet at the playground, the beach, the restaurant. Sometimes we do go to his home, sometimes he spends a few hours at our place.
Last winter I had to call an ambulance for him, his breathing was very bad (his lungs are very damaged, he has severe emphysema). I took my daughter to the hospital with me and next thing I knew social services were calling me. Had I been living with him they probably would have taken my daughter away. Totally unthinkable. MY GIRL with some strangers. And yet they would have been protecting her.
I am still quite attached to her dad (we were together 10 years and he was clean for about 8) yet I have no expectation of him getting clean.
Every once in a while he talks about getting clean and these days I just let him talk.
I do not think that your daughter's dad should be living with you at all, married or unmarried.
