If a person has been using drugs for 20 years, can their body recover? Or is it a matter of time before organs start giving out prematurely?

As stated above, it depends on a bunch of different factors plus everyone's body is different. Just as some can smoke for decades and not get lung cancer and someone who has never smoked can get lung cancer...everyone's body is different.

The only way to determine how severe the damage to the person's body is would be to go to a doctor and get blood tests and have a physical and other tests done.

Many years on benzos drove me crazier and more and more depressed.
They don't seem to have done much physical damage...YET
