As a (now ex?) girlfriend of a heroin addict...are there any books or resources people have to suggest?

An oldie but goody is "Ten Things Woman Do to Mess Up their Lives" by Laura Schessinger. A used copy can be bought at Amazon for 1 cent + S&H.

While I don't agree with the author's current politics, she knows relationships.

CO, I have to agree. The best path forward is one that doesn't include the scars that some of us codependents have to deal with. Lilly, you have been saved a very difficult life ahead because you were not fully enmeshed with the addict. Go forth in your life and realize that addiction is cunning, baffling and there is NO basis for logic.
Don't try to understand him, there is nothing there that will enlighten you. We here on this site have lived with this disease and you are not infected. Enjoy your life, and let him go!
PS: If you were my 22 year old Heroin addict son's girlfriend, I would give you that advice. Go in peace and live your life to the fullest,
Love
Teresa
