I could apply it in a million differnet ways..my daughters shell needed to break for her to get sober..my ego shell needed to break ..still breaking so that I may be free of the old ideas that held me in my small little space..
No one wants the shell to break..it's cozy, you have what you need, breaking it seems like a tragedy, something to be avoided at all costs... untill you become to big for the shell..it no longer serves you, you want to stretch your wings and feel the sun..and then the shell was just something that held you for a while, but you no longer need..

And usually there is that extreme discomfort as that shell gets tighter and tighter and tighter before it has to break and set you free.
