I am so sorry for your loss and appreciate your words so much. I believe that detachment can be done with love and you spoke to that so well. You have a loving community here where too many of our members share the loss of a loved one to this horrible disease of addiction. Please turn to our "family" here anytime that it feels right for you to do so....we love you and care about you. Thank you for reaching out to us during this horrible time in your life. Your words are touching each of us...

Thank you all so much for the condolences and love and support. I think I am still somewhat in disbelief. I suppose that is a coping mechanism. I am trying to stay distracted and busy because the quiet times seem too quiet and unbarable now. So distraction is good I guess. This is a parent's worst nightmare. And just so senseless. Now I am focusing on keeping busy and I want to organize photo albums and scrapbooks of my son's life so that his future nieces and nephews and other family members can know him. That is so important to me.
I know that all this is even scary for you all to read because it hits so close to home for all of you. But I really want you all to make sure you let your love for your ALO be known so that they know it in their hearts, even when you are not going to enable them and detach. I hope my son knew that I loved him so much that that is the reason I was hard on him and detaching. I wish my last words to him were I love you. They were not...but I know he knew that I did. Still, having said those words to him every day would make me feel better now. Please tell your loved ones that you love them.

I am truly sorry that you lost your dear son. I cannot imagine your pain. It is our worst nightmare. May God grant you peace and strength to get through each day. We all do the best we know how with our addicted children. Unfortunately love cannot cure them. Your son is no longer struggling with this horrible disease. He is whole again.

Sweetie, maybe the last words you said to him weren't "I love you" but your actions were - which is the goal we are all striving for - to show our love in a healthy, compassionate way.
You gave him a blessing ~ Glad he is at peace now - praying that someday you will be able to have that inner peace too.

You may find a virtual memorial site to be a helpful way to organize those pictures and memories for friends and family to share. Several sites work on donations only and have no advertising, alllowing anyone the ability to create a loving tribute. My husband did a lot of work on my daughter's and I find it a special place to visit and find comfort.
Some people also find Compassionate Friends, an international self help organization for parents who lost children of any age, to be helpful as they work through the grief.

We do have an online memorial/tribute site that was set up through the funeral home. However, I may want to set up another virtual site, eventually. Thanks for the info.
