The two day bit may be punishing the innocent more then the guilty... I like the idea of a family member being present during the visit, or at least some sort of consultation. If a patient is in THAT much pain and needs narcotics, someone close to them must know... I made it impossible for my ABF to get any meds were we live. He got a script for 90 xanax, od'ed and I called the doctor screaming... Needless to say he never got a script from that doctor... and you know what, it did not kill him not to have the xanax. He did just fine without it... I also don't want the doctors to be fined where they can just tap into their malpractice insurance, because that just trickles down to us when we pay our insurance... They need to be penalized in a point type system. Too many points and the level of points, and you loose your license... forever.

The bill is not limiting what docs can prescribe but provide them with a database to look up patients who have multiple visits to other docs for the same meds.

I don't see how this will affect patients' with legitimate pain issues and not drug seeking. However, it will limit the addict from doctor shopping. It's about time they are thinking about a solution.

Yes Cynical, that was a couple of years ago. Now that they are seeing how huge the problem is, they are starting to crack down. And yes, they are giving very stiff penalties for drug offenses in Florida. That case with the little missing girl Haleigh Cummings. The people involved were caught selling opiates. And one girl at the age of 19 years old just got 20 years in prison for selling opiates. I saw it on the Nancy Grace show. I am hopeful that some sort of a bill will be passed.

Since the DEA finds it necessary to track my ClaritinD purchases in every state, every pharmacy through my drivers license, they can and should track narcotics too.

this entire thread just puzzles me....I never go pain pill seeking/shopping..but, for instance 2 days ago I had a dental injury that also set off my TMJ, I tried to ride it out until I could get into the dentist but by 3am I just couldn't manage with the pain. I went to the ER. My fiancee got me a pastry to nibble on because I hadn't eaten all day and the OTC pain killers were upsetting my stomach. DR wallked in, saw me nibbling on pastry and walked out saying there was nothing wrong with me. I have never been prescribed strong narcotics or strong pain meds (other than in hospital following surgeries)...Drs always give me safer alternatives and sometimes do under prescribe for my pain.
so, I don't get it.
Should I ask an addict what to say when I really need serious help with pain?
BTW I got into dentist on emergency basis and he had the tooth pulled in less than an hour and prescribed non addicting pain med. It worked for the first dosage which was to be a double dose. Now, I am still adding my Goodies headache powders on top of the NSAID...which is not a wise thing to do for my stomach!
????????????????????????????????

I work in an ER part time in which I do crisis assessments and drug assessments on people. They treat most patients' the same that aren't doubled over in pain (non-addicts). Of course, they won't Rx an addict with pain meds, however, ER's are growing more hesitant because they are aware of the multitude of people coming to ER's to get medicated and then leave. If they don't have a clear diagnosis causing you your pain, they will discharge you to your PCP (primary care physician) and/or specialist/dentist.

This new bill will help a little but ER docs will always be weary about rx'ing meds. New epidemic in ER's now are enablers coming to ER pretending to be in pain only to give the Rx to their addicts. It's a shame but so true.

thank you. I wound up crying hysterically....I had only gone in because I was at the end of my rope with coping with it. (the pain) Why else would I be there instead of asleep?!!
My counselor does also say that the abusers have made it bad for those of us who do need help with the controlled prescriptions.

It does puzzle me...I know several people who are rx'ed lortabs and such, a few of them sell them. And I just have to wonder...what is it that is going on when they are seeing the DR such that when I rarely do have an unmanagable pain problem it is discounted???

I am just saying that I have never seen a DR who was willing and eager to hand out narcotics indiscriminately. But obviously a problem exists because there are so many people out there getting their hookups and enough to sell???

LOL, I guess when I say that Lortabs don't help my pain and just make me sick to my stomach..it means NSAID which is great if it works!

This problem is part of a mindset that is good and bad. The good part is that the doctors are trying to something for their patients. But at the sametime they are hurting them by not using alternatives.

I call it the instant gratification society. Everybody wants results now. Not only do most Americans don't want to do the work involved they don't want to take the time involved.

It's not just pain killers. It's the docs prescribing a pill or chemical for just about anything going. I have an elderly parent who's blood pressure and energy/awareness level is fine as long as they are active and doing things like a walk a day. When they stop they get sluggish and even their speech becomes midly slurred. And yet the docs just keep on prescribing high BP pills and not a trainer and/or a exercise regime. Why use exercise when you can prescibe a chemical cure.

It is an instant gratification society. Nobody has any patience at all. I agree with you there. I also agree with your point about the doctors prescribing drugs instead of healthy excersize for everything and everyone. Even the elderly. It's ridiculous. A healthy diet and exercise is so much better than any drug.

I'm not quite sure why the doctors do that, but my guess is that doctors do it for a reason. Maybe the drug companies reward them in some way for prescribing them. I really don't know, but I'm sure that there's a reason, and it must have something to do with money.

my husband now goes to the ER (frequently)in level 10 pain, sad face..he knows the chart by heart...he now goes for stomach pain and they give him shots then he gets the smiley face....yet they know his oxy use and his pain dr.is on staff there..aint that something??????? doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. MONEY
ME on the otherhand had a collapsed lung during treatment and they didnt give me a shot until they xrayed me!! I was in the ER multiple times for pain and they called my onc.(not on staff in local er) before giving me anything and I never was given a script I was told to follow up with my onc.or pri.dr.
so I still stick the blame to scumbag doctors who are making big money on addicts and they are also afraid of mentall illness patients too so they give my husband anything to keep him quiet.(he would go wild and they needed security there) I truly truly believe the hospital and his pain dr. is afraid of him, just like I was.

again, most of the time the addicts get the drugs is because they are on medicaid or medicare. If they did not have insurance or had a bad insurance, they would not get the drug... The doctors know they are going to get paid when it's a government insurance.

And yes they are afraid of the mentally ill patients. I've seen that with my own eyes as well. I asked my doctor one day, I said why don't you get rid of some of these addicts in your waiting room, and he said they would retaliate if he didn't give them the drugs.

Yes, this is true, Government insurance works wonders for the doctor and the addict. The addict pays nothing. And the doctor keeps prescribing addictive drugs to keep the patient coming back, so he can keep getting richer. And yes, some people do have serious medical problems and that's how they get the medicaid or medicare. And some of them fake their problems, and get the doctors to sign the papers that they are sick or disabled. It's all a big racket. Great Post Littlebird

I have a mental illness, I am no threat to anyone, in fact I am a very vulnerable person. I feel very hurt and devastated when I cannot get help I need. I have no insurance, my fiancee pays cash or I do without. I am qualified for a disability but there is nothing to help keep one afloat while it goes through the years long process of approval.
Thankfully there are state agencies to help fill in the gap, but I guarantee you that they do not hand out addictive drugs of any kind indiscriminately, they are over-cautious.
I think it is a damned shame that addictive behaviors have deprived me of help when I do seek it out.

No Live, we weren't talking about the mentally ill in general, we were talking about the mentally ill violent people with dependency on opiates. I'm sorry if we didn't word that right. I have no problems with mental illness. I feel sorry for people who are sick.

Addiction is a brain disease. After 3 days its out of your body and then it becomes a mental struggle. So I guess you could say addiction is a mental illness too.

Please don't be offended. I apologize if you were. I realize that alot of really good people have a mental illness, and I don't judge anyone.

Your from Oklahoma. I don't know for sure, cause I have never been there, but I'm thinking its tough getting those pain pills there. But go to Florida, or NY and the doctors give them out like candy. It's a very lucrative business.

Do drs get a monetary cut from prescribing drugs? I largely agree with Cynicalone's libretarian's take, but the pain clinic fiasco seems to me to be a legal crack house. Dealers from all over the country were shopping s florida for supply. Addicts do get to a point where self will is impossible and scripts is something that can be controlled much more easily than illegal drugs. The Drs and rnps that run these outfits should be given harsher sentences than street dealers/kingpins.

Whoa Elegantly Wasted. You are so right. You have a great point there. Thanks for that. I feel the same way. All it is, is a legal dope farm. And those doctors are killing our young. I heard they are cracking down on them now.

I apologize for personalizing it! LOL, I moved here from FL also!
I suppose I am rather naive about all this. My politics are liberal, however, so I would vote for freedom with it's potential for abuse. And I could be the wrongest person on the planet...I have never had to deal with anyone with an opiate addiction, don't even personally no one...so let me bow out and thank you!
