My therapist (addiction specialist) told me the smarter they are the harder it is for them to accept their disease. The same thing goes for me as a co-dependent. I accepted my co-dependency when I could no longer outsmart myself.

The more I've learned about this disease, the more I'm convinced people with dual diagnosis need to be forcibly stopped. Simply because they can't stop themselves, their brains are so foggy.

I had a childhood friend who was diagnosed schizophrenic right around age 30 and there was no drug abuse. He had to be involuntarily committed several times (was a danger to himself) before he learned to stay on his meds.

Please talk to a professional, see if there's a course of action you might take to help your son. Enabling is doing for others what they can and should be doing for themselves. It doesn't sound like your son is able.

My prayers are with your family.
