OT: Prayer request for my son

My 24 year old son will be having surgery Friday, to repair three tears in his retina. From the looks of things the tears have been there about 5-6 months and it was increasing vision loss that sent him to see a specialist.

The surgeon won't have any answers until he gets in there. While he's positive the retina can be successfully reattached, how much vision loss and whether it's temporary or permanent might take months to answer. He warned us my son may require another surgery.

I watched fireflies doing their dance tonight and they brought tears to my eyes. If you can, please say a prayer for my son and steady hands for the surgeon.

Adding my prayers too, this must be scary for both of you. It is amazing what doctors can do today, and you son will be in good hands. Good for him for getting it checked out.

More Hugs

I will pray for your son and for the doctor to be filled with wisdom and skill.
These surgeries are so scary for us but they are very common for doctors so try to have faith.

My daughter is very upset by this and she's very worried about him being on painkillers. He normally shuns them but like she reminded me, so did she until the day she didn't. Then I asked her if knowing painkillers will be in the house is causing her any problems, and she answered honestly - yes. She said it flashed her across her brain so fast it was like being broadsided. I've asked her to please talk to her group about it and let me know if she needs my help.

I've worn corrective lenses since I was 7 years old and have always appreciated my eyesight, never taking it for granted. About 6 years ago I was diagnosed with glaucoma but, because it was caught early, I have no vision loss. I don't take that for granted either because I know it can change overnight. Photography and travel is my passion and my eyes have always been the reason.

So having said all that, I am definitely identifying with my son's plight. That he has vision loss right now, just a big blurry mess in one eye and understanding it may not clear up, breaks my heart. Knowing he's at an increased risk for this happening again and in the other eye, too, makes me wish I would have taken him on more trips.

Yes, I am powerless and it hurts. But I'm not hopeless or helpless. When this is over and done with, I'm going to take both my adult children some place beautiful like Hawaii. They were both so upset when we didn't take them with us the two times we went. Those were the only times we didn't include them in an adventure and we kept saying how much they would have loved it. I do have the power to change that and I will.

Thank you, everyone.

((Chino))

First of all, I am SO glad you called today...you helped ME out a lot and I always enjoy talking to you.

I'm glad your daughter is talking about her thoughts on pain meds. I don't know about his surgery, but when my XABF's mom had eye surgery, she got more local anesthetic pain meds (like eye drops) so it may not be as big a problem as she is thinking, but it's great that she is thinking and planning ahead.

Your family is in my prayers. It's times like this, when we realize things we take for granted (like vision)..and most of us do it. Thanks for reminding me of all I have to be grateful for.

Hugs and prayers!

Amy
