Found out AH Has a Shrinking Kidney

He told me yesterday.....
But do you think he would realize or admit it's from years of drug abuse?
No..... he says it's probably from his high blood pressure, and mountain dew.

I just read that kidney atrophy (shrinking kidney) can be caused by long term use of over the counter pain relievers (I wonder if narcotic pain relievers count), heroine and meth (which he did in his younger years), and crack. He sees a kidney specialist this week. He thinks this is all going to be okay with medicine, and drinking more water. He doesn't realize that when the kidneys don't work properly that toxins aren't released from the body properly therefore can cause damage to other organs also. He's been taking hydrocodone/percocet, zanax, and relapses on crack for many years.
Lord knows what else that I don't know about. So these toxins are staying in his body longer.

He's been getting sick alot lately and I wondered why. Bacterial infection, one after the other. This explains why.

I feel sad. I feel like he is dying.

The kidneys are like a giant screen that clean out our body. when they are overloaded with alcohol and drugs they spend so much time cleaning up the system that they are just overloaded and cant function properly - therefore they cant clean the system. I just went through this talk with my sons diabetes doc this week because diabetics are prone to kidney failure and is already starting to have kidney problems. That was just one more piece of bad news that i got this week - we're waiting for the tests to come back on how bad it is and whether he needs to start taking meds - meds that usually people dont take till their elderly i might add. Its not just alcohol its everything we put in our bodies. Once the kidneys start going you really have to watch anything you put in your body. but let him quack and blame mt dew - i drink a lot of mt dew and i dont have kidney problems. alcohol, heroine, ecstasy, and many other drugs cause liver disease. i'd have a hard time not saying "your full of sh--" when he makes these claims.

guess you notice you hit a nerve with the kidney thing huh honestly its the one thing that i havent spoken of this week because it scares me that AS internal organs are already dying and he's only 16. the kid's going to be a invalid by the time he's 21.

I am offering up prayers and good wishes for both of you... and big warm virtual hugs in the meantime while we wait and see what the addicts in our lives decide to do for themselves. Love to you both.

Winnie, I'm sorry I started the thread.... that's all you needed to hear right? I don't know why they do this to themselves. AH just thinks he's gonna be invincible through this one too. He just doesn't "get it" or he doesn't want to "get it."

i'd have a hard time not saying "your full of sh--" when he makes these claims.
Well, when he told me, I had to process it first. Look up more info on it first. Now I know. So I'll probably tell him how full of crap he is next time I see him. Then I'll tell him "ignorance isn't bliss."

but let him quack and blame mt dew
Yeah....He minimizes everything.

I hope the news coming back from your sons tests isn't too devastating winnie. I know it's worse with a diabetic because the kidneys and the pancreas have to be watched also. Mentally I think AH is about the age of your son. Huggs.
