Black belt in Al-anon

My son's sponsor at his rehab called for the 1st time tonight
He told me that my son told him that I have a "black belt in Al-anon."
I take this as a complement.

I have done the work and continue to because al-anon works when you work
it. Given time in the program my way of reacting has changed. I was raised in
dysfunction, but now I know a better way.

I am healthier, therefore my relationships are healthier.
I love that my son (AS) and I speak the same language for the 1st time in a long time
and that there is more intimacy between myself and my husband.
Life is good.

Anybody else making progress and seeing benefits.

" Hope begins in the dark,
the stubborn hope that if you just show up
and try to the the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait, watch and work.
You don't give up! "

By the way, my son is in his 7 mo. of treatment.
Knowing when to detach and when to rally around him has been part of the process
that got him there. He gets all the credit for staying and doing the hard work of recovery.

I think it's a compliment too. Let me see, do I have my black belt in Al-Anon?

Before we earn our black belt, we need to learn how to "learn"...to listen to those who went before us and trust that we too can have what they have.

We need to learn self-discipline, to keep our balance at all times and to know that we will work through the pain and have better days ahead. We learn not to let our stumbling and failures become who we are, but instead let them become lessons that help us move forward with more confidence.

We need to be aware of our surroundings, on guard against triggers and old ploys, and remain well footed on our path or recovery.

We learn strength, endurance and grace and how to keep our minds and body filled with positive energy.

And we learn how to use our recovery to maintain our own well being without appearing a threat to anyone else.

Yup, I think I'd like my black belt too. :D

oh, I think there are several of you who have a black belt in al-anon!

((SS)) that is so cool your son said that! Yes, he gets the credit for his recovery, but you get credit for letting him find his way to that point by not enabling him.

Hugs and prayers!
