Red face My sister is so funny...

I spoke with her a little while ago, and the first thing she wanted to tell me was the number of days she has been sober lol. I told her that I was so proud that I wanted to take her out to dinner tomorrow night to celebrate. She said fine, but on one condition: she has to be back in time to get to her meeting! How wonderful is that?!? I am a little apprehensive about going, but I really want to because it means that we will hopefully begin to get closer again.

Any thoughts, suggestions or tips? I don't want to say or do the wrong thing...

I think all you have to do is be yourself. There is nothing you can say or do that would make her use or not that is her choice. So don't worry!! And big congrats to your sister for her clean time. ((((((((((BIGHUGS))))))))) to you too for being a caring loving SIS!!

That's awesome

There is nothing you can say or do wrong - remember the 3 c's
You didn't cause it
You can't control it
You can't cure it

You can be supportive - which is sounds like you are doing GREAT at that. You can let her know that if at anytime she feels uncomfortable at the restuarant or needs to leave that you understand her disease and support her need to take care of herself and that you also are doing the same to take care of yourself and ask the same understanding for yourself.

Hope both of you have a great time together!!!

Wishing you Serenity & Joy,
Rita

You're being such a good sister, very supportive. At times like this, it's easy to forget that we aren't responsible for their recovery or their program any more than we are responsible for their "slips" or their addictions. She'll remain sober if it's her time and she's ready to really work for it. She'll go back out if she's not done yet. And all you can do is love her through it.

One day at a time - for BOTH of you!

Hugs

I'll tell you something I've done (so maybe you don't do it... smile)... I talked (incessantly, my son tells me) about recovery.

There ARE other things going on in the world, but at the time - *I* couldn't think of any!!

Enjoy the dinner. I got my sister back 3 years ago... it has been heaven!

Definitely be a good listener. I feel like I'm constantly babbling about recovery to my ras. Why do I think that harping about it will make a difference. Enjoy your time together. This is really good news.

I have to hold my tongue down so that I don't teach, preach, or nag. In recovery they are learning a new language and so must we. I also remind myself not to ask all "those questions" Becoming a good listener has helped me greatly. Just let it flow without any analysis works for me. Laugh. Let the goal be to have a good time. What a wonderful evening you have to look forward to.
