?Medical Detox?

My AD actually showed up at her outpaitent appointment today. ( I heard she looked pretty bad last night) She said she could not get into the detox she has been in a few times before. They said she needs medical detox. She is shooting heroin. She has no ins & not quite eligable for medicaid. Why medical detox now? She has detoxed off heroin (snorting) before.

Hmm I'm not sure. I think its more to monitor closely the withdrawls maybe they are a bit more intense once u shoot. I know with opiate withdrawls the blood pressure rises alot and there might be a possibility of other things. I would guess its more to monitor and maybe give a blood pressure med and maybe a benzo for a bit to help. thats the only thing I could think off. Maybe the other rehab didnt have the authority to give these drugs out. I think its usually chlonodine (sp) and trazadone to help with sleep. I hope she really seeks out help and treatment. I know its hard. I think after a certain period of clean time we think we have our addiction beat and we can use again and control it well thats a huge lie. Also I think that we hope for the first high we got when u havent used in a while its more intense. (((hugs)))

helpus - A celebrity comic who is a herion addict in recovery was saying with subutex he was able to go through withdrawls without the medical problems associated. He is clean now and he says he owes his life to this drug. I dunno but you might look into it. http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopag...ne/default.htm

I have always heard that detoxing from heroin is incredibly painful but rarely life threatening. I guess i'm not real comfortable with the word "rarely" and perhaps this is why they recommend medical supervision. I assume you mean medical supervision and not necessarily use of another opiate to detox. One thing I read said blood pressure can sky rocket as was mentioned by KJ.
What about a hospital? They have to take her don't they, whether she has insurance or not? Praying her NA friends and counselor can help her through this. Hugs and prayers for you too sweetie.

Thanks guys. Noah, I have heard of suboxone, thank you for the reminder & the link. Last week she was in the ER for trying to get off herion. She wanted to be admited to another hospital but they wouldn't take her. She wasn't medicaid. She would have to have $1200 a day for them to take her. (I dodn't hear about this untill she was on her way out of the ER) They gave her chlonodine & valium. Yes lets let a drug addict walk out with a script for vailum. She claimed to have ripped that up.
She did somehow manage to work tonight. But she is now out & probably shooting up. I heard that this morning she shot up alone. She had asked a girl that was staying with her & showed her how to shoot up, to leave. She hadn't done that by herself yet until today. I am scared for her to be alone tonight.
I have to keep a good thought & hope she will call the detox number she got in the morning. I also hope she calls the ins co. She applied for Healthy NY. The paper work was in the final stages. It is much cheaper than paying cobra. But I don't think that will come through in time. I just want her to get help & we'll figure out the $$ later.

We know that the disease is progressive, but it is so sad and scary to see it in action. Her disease picked up where she would have been without all those months of recovery. I'm praying that her HP will wrap his loving arms around her and lift her back along the recovery path. Praying that your HP continues to give you strength and comfort. Much love.

My AD has made the call & is being expected in a few hours for medical detox. We will be leaving in just abit. It is about an hour & 1/2 from here. She doesn't bring any clothes, they said she will be in scrubs. So here's a big high five to the first step. Thanks

Glad to hear she is going. Now take a deep breath, relax and do something nice for yourself. The rest is up to her. Sending hugs and of course prayers. Marle
