That's Your Bucket of Sh-t!
I just blogged about this, but I wanted to remember to share it with you guys. At my last meeting, we were talking about boundaries, and one woman brought up the metaphor of a "bucket of ****." She said that whenever her husband started complaining about the messes he'd made from his using or asking her to do something to fix his problems (pay a dealer, lie to family members, pay some debt), she's started telling him that the situation is his "bucket of ****," and that he's going to have to carry it himself. I thought it was a brilliant metaphor, and so useful to help those of us who struggle with boundaries to think about them more effectively. If you didn't help make it, it's his bucket of **** to carry. If you don't want to be associated with it or get its stink on your hands, it's probably his bucket of ****. If you want him to keep it away from you so it doesn't get splashed up on your nice clothes, it's his bucket of ****.
Metaphors help me. I'm a writer...but I thought this was a good one!
