I'm in Alberta, Canada too along with Big Sis. She's right...cigs are $11.00 a pack - never thought I'd pay that much, but...

As for houses, in the city I'm living in the average price of a 3 BR, pretty standard maybe 1000 square foot house is about $350,000. I sold a condo here 2 years ago for $149,000 - an identical one is on the market right now for $280,000. Alberta is booming in the oil business right now - things have gone crazy for the last couple of years which explains the huge jump.

My house is 99 yrs old and a real GEM, 2 story, 3 BR hardwood floors, 3 car garage AND a separate 200 sq ft bldg outside that will become my office this next summer... and it was $140,000. (And yes, I know for a fact that I stole it!) There is a lot of new construction here, and the 1800 sq ft I have could easily cost me $200- $250k new.

PS The topic on the Today Show this morning was money and how it's tacky to ask someone how much they make or how much they paid for something.

PPSS Sis, do you still have to pay for your milk since you've got those BFE cows?

I'm in greater St. Louis, MO area.

Milk at Walmart (Great Value Brand) $2.92 per gallon

Gas at QT yesterday (Unleaded) $2.34/gallon

Cigarettes at QT (Marlboro Red 100's Box) $25.78/carton

Our house is 5 years old, 3,000+ square feet, four bedroom (we converted the living room to a fifth bedroom), master suite with jacuzzi tub, two car garage, another full bath and a half, basement (unfinished but plumbed for bathroom), 1/2 acre, real nice neighborhood that is growing really fast. We paid $204,000. It's now appraised at $217,000 not even a year later.

That is the good thing about living here in Missouri. Although I hate the fact that winter sucks and it seems like it's always dark and cold, and there is no ocean even close, and the closest thing to an ocean is Lake of Ozarks which is about 4 hours away and really sucks in comparison, it is really easy to survive here. I found it a lot harder when I moved back to Atlanta for a year..the cost of living is so much higher as far as housing goes and the commute there totally sucks! But the weather and tourist stuff is awesome.

Gas 2.69
Milk 1.99
Upstate NY

Homes depend in the "ritzy" areas tons of $ 300 +
My area 100+ for cute older houses. Funny drive 20 min east and the same house would be 400+ so depends. I pay 640 rent for a 1brm 2 story older house. I love it. My sister bought a house couple towns over 2bdr 2 story cute house with beautiful lawn for 50,000 so around here it goes all over the place

Here salaries are so bad no one can afford rent without combining households, and now the cost of electric is rising and has doubled since hurricanes a few years ago

I'm lucky with the electric thing especially since it has been a VERY COLD winter here. The town I live in has their own company my highest bill this winter has been 69.00 thats how I justified paying so much for rent. I used to pay 450.00 but my electric and gas bills were more than the rent was outragous!

My aunt, unlce and cousins used to live up there until they moved here two years ago. They lived in Port Orchard. I loved hearing stories of watching Killer Whales at the inlet
