Allright folks, you've already agreed to disagree. Several times. Can you just move on and stop going in circles over the same subject? Failure to move along will cause this thread to be locked.

I would like to thank EVERYONE for their opinions. You guys have offered me a lot of different perspectives on this situation. It really has been helpful and given me tons to think about. I've realized the situation has no black or white answers--there is a lot of gray area. I will check into a doc that has some experince with this. That may be a major task in itself. Like I've stated before, we live in a very small, sleepy town and all the docs in this area are a little behind the times, so to speak. For a specialist in any field we usually have to drive approx. 2 hrs. So, again....thanks so much for taking the time to post your experiences. There are really no words to express what it means to me.

Well I'd say that it could be a start, he might be sincere, good luck to you and your husband. And indeed, staying off the alcohol can help depression a great deal.

yes, there are rarely absolutes when dealing with any situation. Try to keep an open mind. I do agree with mallowcup that a lot of addicts are trying to self medicate feelings whether they are emotional or psychiatric in nature. Some have bad backagrounds or memories they want to escape. Some have horrific mental issues they are dealing with such as depression, bipolar, schizophrenia. they know by drinking, they can tame the mental feelings down to make them easier to deal with. Then there is the genetic component as well that none of us can ignore, some are just more prone. It's a very hard disease to battle regardless of the reason it is done, one I am blessed not to have.

I know before my husband was prescribed Paxil he drank 8-10 beers a day. He now drinks a beer a couple of times a week. Not perfect but a improvement nontheless. I hope for both of you that it works for him. Kerry

Before my spouse was on meds for his bipolar, his urge to drink alcohol was unbelievable, he was trying to calm the mania.
