I found that when I let go of my anger, I found compassion for my alcoholic loved one, too, and for all those suffering from the effects of addiction. I'm so sorry you lost your step-father.
Years ago, when my youngest brother was struck and killed by lightening I took solace in the fact that the last thing I said to him was "I love you." He kissed me on the cheek and said, "I love you, too," then dashed out the door, and I never saw him again.
When my father died in August, I was grateful that I was able to spend a few moments alone with him. He stroked my hand. He told me that he loved me and that I was pretty, and I looked especially pretty in pink. I said, "I love you, too, poppy" and then he slipped away.
Losing a loved one is never easy, but it eases the pain a bit when you have a chance to say goodbye in a loving manner.
Sending prayers for you, your step-father, and your mother, and to all those who loved your step-father.

I am new to this forum and was very inspired by your post. My mother is currently dying of cirhossis of the liver and congestive heart failure due to alcoholism. Our relationship has always been strained to say the least. My goal is to get to a place similar to where you are. I just want to do the right thing and find a balance somewhere between being codependent and complete disconnection. Thank you so much for sharing. It was very helpful to remind me of where I want to go in this journey.

What you shared means more to me than you might know.
We are all inspirations...

It would be that we're all OK...
