Goldfish

Hi everyone,

I need some advise on my goldfish. I have a 10 gallon tank w/ 3 goldfish and 1 algae eater. The fish range in size from 1 1/2 in to 3 in.

Here is the problem...I think the middle one is suicidal. He kept sucking up the colored gravel and getting it stuck in his mouth until we switched to marbles which are too large for this to happen.

Sunday evening while the kids and I were at my sister's house he jumped out of the tank and landed on the carpet. My husband went to a meeting an hour before we got home. He said he fed the fish right before he left.

Well, the kids freaked out when they saw him on the floor. I told them that daddy will help us bury him when he gets home. I just couldn't leave him there on the floor so I scraped him onto a paper plate.

His tail wiggled! I tossed him into the tank and eventually he started to come alive.

It's been almost 48 hours. He looks sick but he eats and swims alittle. What do I do???

YEA!! I raise goldies

This is gonna sound harsh..but if he is not too far gone, it should work.

Take three or four ice cubes and put in the tank. Two reasons.

1. The extra oxygen from the ice helps "freshen" the tank AND

2. The bit of water shock (not enough to kill) will stimulate him to breathe.

Hope the little guy does okay.

See? Alcoholism really IS a family disease. Even the fish are affected...

How long do I let the children suffer? They are truely concerned about the welfare of Sparkles(checking on him regularly). Do you think he could be putting off harmful toxins to the other fish? I don't want to traumatize him anymore by isolating him by physically removing him from the tank.
Thanks...Sandy

Have you talked to anyone at a pet store. I had an aquarium and when they acted strange, it was an indication of a disease or problem.

Kathy,
I will call tomorrow. I'm feeling really sorry for the little fellow, but I'm not God and I cannot take his life.

Sandyr - I feel for you! We have an ark full of animals... once we had fish tank & our Beta was sick - had a growth on it's side, it got so big that he couldn't swim straight.. AH wanted to flush him - ALIVE! I wouldn't allow it, I didn't want him dying in some sewer!

Sparkles was in much distress after my posts last night. He was to the point of laying on the bottom on his side. When the kids went to bed my husband scooped him in the net and through him out into the marina. I'm sure that we are going to have a sad morning around here.
Bye all and thanks..

Oh dear Sandy, I'm sorry it ended like this. Even the least of us deserves love and comfort. I'm sure that what was done...was done out of caring and concern for the children. Hug them tight and encourage them to talk about Sparkles.

I myself am a fish killer. Not intentionally but they do not seem to thrive in my house. Your kids will take their cues from you, so if you don't make to big a deal of the fish maybe they wont either.
